AYERSVILLE: May 24 – Seven local schools sent combatants to the Ayersville D-III Track and Field Districts on May 22 and 24. Of those schools, only three will see their athletes moving on to the D-III Tiffin Regionals. Competition was extremely tough, and many who were favored to make deep postseason runs are instead cleaning out their lockers.

Only two first place finishes were registered by local schools, neither of which came as a surprise. The Pettisville Blackbirds, a longtime powerhouse in the 4×800 event, continued the trend in Ayersville. The team of Kyle Lantz, Jeremy Mann, Austin Dykstra and Dominic Frey took first over a tough Archbold team.

The other first place finish belonged to Will McKinney, the lone advancer for the Hilltop Cadets. His leap of 12′ 8″ in the pole vault put him in the catbird seat over the three-way 12′ logjam for second through fourth.

Dylan Snyder of Montpelier was able to get out in the 110 hurdles, as was the Locos’ 4×200 sprint team.

Of special note was the presentation of the Fred Daffler Sportsmanship Award, an honor voted upon by the officials of the Ohio Division III Northwest District. The award for 2014 was presented to Dominic Frey of Pettisville.
