The Delta Planning Commission decided not to recommend a new sidewalk ordinance while discussing the state of the village’s infrastructure during their meeting on Wednesday evening.

At the commission’s last meeting, residents and commissioners alike shared their concerns regarding sidewalks not being installed in front of new construction.

The commission considered recommending to the Delta Village Council that a new ordinance be drafted to force their construction, among other potential requirements, but instead tabled the discussion while awaiting additional information from Village Administrator Chris Frazer.

“Ultimately, the planning commission was satisfied with the current ordinances, so they decided not to pursue a new ordinance requiring new sidewalks for new builds,” Frazer said.

“They are, however, drafting an opinion letter to the village council about enforcing the implementation of sidewalks for new and future builds.”

According to the existing ordinance, the council can require residents within the corporate limits to install sidewalks if it determines it is “in the best interest of the citizens of the village.”

It also states the administrator can require residents to repair their sidewalks if they are “in need of repair or are in a dangerous condition or which may become dangerous through being broken, or raised.”

The commission approved a recommendation to the council that they adopt a fire hydrant ordinance as recommended by Delta Community Fire Chief Jeremy Gillen.

Gillen provided for reference an ordinance currently on the books in North Olmsted, which includes “standards for the placement, design, installation, and maintenance of fire hydrants” both public and private, including private fire service water mains, as well as requirements for access streets, roadways, and driveways to allow passage and support the weight of fire department vehicles.

Frazer reported Love’s Travel Stop has closed on the purchase of the property for its new facility in Delta.
