DELTA – A lot of people’s assumptions might have been that Delta senior Adam Mattin was going to follow his brothers and continue his wrestling career at the University of Michigan.
But that is not the case. Last Friday, Mattin signed a National Letter of Intent to head west to California and wrestle for the Stanford Cardinal.
“I chose Stanford because of how much it felt like home when I visited. The team was very tight knit, and I could see the coaches were creating a culture that I feel I can thrive in and become the best version of myself”, said Mattin when explaining his decision.
“I also love that Stanford has both prestigious academics and athletic programs. Obviously, my brothers have played a huge part in making me the person I am today so wanting to go to Michigan and follow in their footsteps was always appealing to me.”
“But as I began to make my decision, I realized that Michigan was not the best place for me. I visited both North Carolina and Michigan along with Stanford but after my first day on Stanford’s campus I knew that it was where I was meant to be.”
“Overall, the recruiting process was very exciting and even a bit stressful at times. The first school to contact me was Stanford which meant a lot.”
“As I was going through the process it really made me realize how blessed I was to receive these amazing opportunities and therefore I was grateful for all the schools I was fortunate enough to talk to.”
Mattin already has an impressive list of accomplishments entering his senior season on the mat as he is a three-time state finalist and two-time state champion. One of his proudest achievements was being a part of last year’s team dual state championship team at Delta.
Mattin has been successful in the classroom also, carrying a 4.0 GPA while making First Honor Roll all four years.
He has also been the class president for all four years and has been a four-year member of student council and Sources of Strength.
Mattin, who is leaning toward majoring in Human Biology as he’s interested in joining the medical field, credits his leadership class teacher, Mr. Freado, as being a great influence on him and the school.
“I am incredibly grateful for all the support of the Delta community as well as the Delta Wrestling Club”, added Mattin.
“I would like to thank my whole family for their continued support but specifically I would like to thank my parents for supporting my dreams and pushing me to be my best every day.”

“I would also like to thank my three brothers Drew, Cole, and Zack as they have been the three greatest role models anyone could ask for and for inspiring me in everything, they do both on and off the wrestling mat.”
“My final thank you goes out to my coaches and teammates for being right by my side my whole wrestling career. I would like to specifically thank for being both a great friend and drill partner, Richard Flores III, throughout my high school career. GO CARD!!”
