Revving engines, the smell of meat, and the energy of community pride filled downtown Wauseon on Saturday, May 17, during the first-ever Bikers, Bands, and BBQ Block Party.
Hosted by Day Dream Youth Services, the event served as a major fundraiser for a new youth arts center being planned for the area.
The goal for this event is to gather funds to create a safe, creative space for kids in foster care and other disadvantaged situations, offering them after-school outlets through art, guidance, and connection.
The planned center will house five different studio spaces under one roof, including areas for ceramics, painting, tie-dye, and more. Organizers hope it will become a place where kids can explore hobbies, build confidence, and stay off the streets.
“We want to reach as many economically disadvantaged kids in Fulton County as possible,” said Angel Matthews, a volunteer helping lead the effort.
“Especially those who may not have the best home life or need adult nurturing. This is about giving them something positive to turn to.”
The idea for this event has been in the works for the past two years. After forming the nonprofit, founder Destiny Salyers has steadily built momentum behind the project. Conversations about opening the center began earlier this year and have only grown stronger since.
Saturday’s block party brought the concept to life in a tangible way. Supporters lined up in the streets, motorcycle enthusiasts showed off their bikes, and the smell of barbecue brought people together in celebration of a cause rooted in care.
“It’s good to see something like this downtown,” Angel added. “It brings new life to the area and reminds people that change can start with something creative.”
As the organization continues to raise funds for the building, community members are encouraged to get involved, spread the word, and help turn the vision into a reality.
