In an exciting end-of-the-year celebration of music and education, over 500 fourth-grade students from Bryan, Montpelier, North Central, and neighboring school districts gathered at the Bryan Arts and Education Center for a special outreach concert presented by the Toledo Symphony Orchestra (TSO).

This event marked a significant expansion from previous years, where performances were often held at St. Patrick Catholic School. Thanks to generous community support, the concert was made accessible to a broader audience of young learners.

The TSO woodwind quintet, featuring the clarinet, bassoon, french horn, oboe, and flute, brought Sergei Prokofiev’s classic “Peter and the Wolf” to life.

Each instrument personified a character from the tale: the flute chirped as the bird, the clarinet meowed as the cat, and so forth.

This imaginative approach not only entertained but also educated students on the unique sounds and roles of the orchestral instruments.

Beyond the performance, the musicians engaged students with educational materials detailing the history and mechanics of their instruments.

This initiative aimed to deepen students’ appreciation for music and possibly inspire them to pursue musical teaching.

The success of this outreach concert helps teach the importance of community involvement in arts education. By bringing live symphonic music into the young lives of students, TSO fosters a lasting impression of the arts.

For more information on the Toledo Symphony Orchestra’s education programs and upcoming events, visit their official website. The Bryan Arts and Education Center warmly thanks Amy Heritage (Flutist), Michele Tosser Smith (Oboist), Georg Klaas (Clarinetist), Casey Gsell (Bassoonist), and Emily Price Dietz (Hornist) for their beautiful performance.
