An electrical fire was reported inside the Swanton Village Office building Tuesday, according to an email from village officials.

Village Administrator Shannon Shulters said emergency personnel responded to what appeared to be an electrical fire within the municipal building and were actively assessing the situation.

Officials have not confirmed the extent of the damage or how long emergency crews will remain on scene. Village staff was evacuated and officials confirmed that everyone is safe.

As a result of the incident, the Swanton Village Offices are currently closed. “The initial assessment from Fire Chief Cuyler is that it was an electrical fire that started in the attic,” stated Swanton Mayor Neil Toeppe.

“It is likely that we will be out of the building for possibly six months or longer. The major issue is data. The servers have been shut down. Utility billing has been interrupted.”

The village will be announcing an operational continuity plan for all municipal services— including utility billing, administrative offices, and police department operations—as soon as those details are finalized.

They anticipate temporarily relocating essential services to the Swanton Community Center later this week or early next week to ensure continued service to our residents.
