Students at North Central Local Schools showcased months of scientific research and experimentation during the school’s third annual science fair, held Friday, May 15, 2026, in the High School Eagle Room.

Kendall Moreland’s “Petal Potion” project demonstrated how white flowers change the color of their petals when watered with dye.
Kendall Moreland created a “Petal Potion” project where she demonstrated how white flowers can change the color of their petals by using dyed water.

The event featured projects created by fifth grade students, who began planning and researching their experiments back in September as part of a yearlong focus on understanding the scientific process.

Drew White showed a live water purification system built with rocks, sand, charcoal, and cotton that created safe, clean drinking water.

The fair’s activities are intentionally spread throughout the school year to help students learn proper research methods and gain a deeper understanding of scientific experimentation before presenting their final projects in May.

Mary MacKinnon’s “Double Bubble Soapy Trouble” project researched which soap brands are meltable in the microwave.

A wide range of creative and hands-on projects filled the Eagle Room, with students exploring questions both practical and entertaining. Topics included determining which baseball bat material was the most effective, testing which type of paper created the best paper airplane, and many more engineering-based ideas.

Avery Kemarly’s science fair project tested which type of nail polish lasts the longest.

One project included a demonstration of how white flowers can change color when watered with dyed water, another compared the spiciest chips, while another student created a live water purification system.

Dean Maginn’s project tested which type of paper makes the best paper airplane.

Fifth grade science teacher Abbie Apple coordinated the event and helped guide students throughout the school year. Winners of the science fair are expected to be announced during the district’s fourth quarter awards program on May 28, 2026.
