Wauseon, OH (April 3, 2017) —Fulton County will celebrate National County Government Month (NCGM) in April to showcase how the county is building a healthy, vibrant and safe community through innovative efforts in managing justice and public safety systems, fostering conditions for economic growth, strengthening infrastructure and pursuing many other efforts to improve residents’ quality of life.

The theme for this year’s celebration of NCGM is “Brilliant Ideas at Work,” showcasing how counties are trailblazing new approaches to seize opportunities and overcome community challenges. This year’s events will again feature the “Did You Know” facts and information that are being posted on the counties website and Facebook page. New facts and information will be posted every day of April at www.fultoncountyoh.com, where their Facebook page can also be accessed. To coincide with this initiative, Fulton County will also be releasing their 2016 Annual Report in April.

The highlight initiatives for Fulton County will be hosting several schools for County Government Day tours. Starting the initiative off mid-March was the Wauseon High School Junior Government class. Also scheduled are Fayette High School Juniors, Archbold Senior Seminar Class, Swanton High School Juniors and Wauseon Second Graders in May. The groups have the opportunity to visit many of the elected officials offices and departments throughout the county. The students may have the opportunity to sit in on court hearings at the Court of Common Pleas, Western District Court and visit the Juvenile and Probate Court. They will also have the opportunity to tour the 9-1-1 Operations Center at the Sheriff’s Office as well as visit Job & Family Services, the Health Department, Emergency Management Agency Services, Emergency Medical Services, Board of Elections, Commissioners Sessions and much more. “Our goal is to make a local connection with students as they learn about the many aspects of government, expose them to the vast careers in local government as well as to foster civic engagement and tools,” states Toni Schindler, director of marketing and communications for the Fulton County Commissioners.

Schindler notes that there are several communication initiatives from past NCGM’s that are still in full force today. One of those communication pieces is a monthly news brief called the Fulton County Focus that is sent out via “County News & Press Releases” located on the Fulton County Website. Also available on the website are the Commissioners Corner radio shows that interview various county departments. These shows are also aired on 96.1 WMTR every Monday morning at 6am and noon.

Since 1991 the National Association of Counties (NACo) has encouraged counties across the country to raise public awareness and understanding about the roles and responsibilities of counties.
