As part of the May 10, 2021 School Board meeting at Millcreek West Unity Local Schools, Kraig Beilharz from BA Beilharz Architects, Inc. gave a presentation to the board. Superintendent Jim Wyse welcomed Mr. Beilharz and assisted with visuals on the screen.

The plans presented are up for consideration, and included changing the old weight room into a Vocal Room for choirs, putting in a solid, sound proof wall for acoustic privacy in another room for mentoring and speech, as well as building a new gymnasium complex connected to the school near the back parking lot.

It would house a new weigh room, locker rooms, seat 440 people in the collapsible bleachers, and be big enough for the Archery Tournament to be held.

The Board approved a motion “to authorize the solicitation of professional design services to authorize the formation of an evaluation committee consisting of the Board President, Vice President, Superintendent, Treasurer and High School Principal, and to set the date for the evaluation/ranking meeting to occur on June 25, 2021 at 7:15 in the Hilltop HS Conference room.”

In other business, the Board accepted the Treasurer’s Report of the Five Year Forecast and a Second reading of the NEOLA policy new and revisions. Superintendent Wyse recognized Mr. Connor English who will be next year’s 5th and 6th grade Science teacher. He mentioned that they will be hiring two teachers for next year with grant money.

In his report, High School Principal, Steve Riley, congratulated the students who were named as Student of the Month for April and those in FFA who received their State FFA Degrees during a Virtual Ceremony on May 3.

He told the board that this is the largest number of Hilltop students to receive their State Degree in the same school year. The students were Leanna Baker, Bryce Buehrer, Ian Hoffman, Alex Horton, Joe Reamsnyder, Lauryann Wieland and Matt Wise.

Also, during the Virtual State Convention, Kodi Brenner received a Gold Star Rating on the Treasurer’s Book and Bryce Buehrer received a Gold Star Rating on the Recorder’s Book.

On Thursday and Friday, May 6 and 7, the students had the opportunity to hear from experts in a wide variety of career fields. In the past they have taken the students to the businesses, but due to covid they were unable to have a Career Day at all last year.

He was happy they were able to make it happen this year by bringing business individuals to the students. Kelly Colon – Social Worker, Aaron Dunlap from Klinger Pharmacy, Mark Hagans – Attorney, Stephanie Karhoff -OSU Extension Educator, Jason King from King’s Furniture, Brian Metger and Rudy Rio – Advertising, Patsy Miller -Registered Nurse, Dennis Myers from WC Board of Developmental Disabilities, David Sharps from Menards, Kaylista Underwood – Professional Photographer, Bruce VanArsdalen from Tomco, Barnaby Wyse – Plumbing/Heating, as well as representatives from Northwest State Community College, Defiance College and the U.S. Marine Corps were all there to share with the students.

During the Career Day activities, Seniors in Ms. Bruner’s Economic class and Ms. Yoh’s English IV class spent the day performing community service for the Village of West unity and the school.

Ms. Helen Phillips is “re-retiring” at the end of the school year after spending seven years with Hilltop in the Family Consumer Science Program, and thirty two total years in education.

SENIOR NEXT Day was held on April 23 at the Quality Inn. “This is a HSTW initiative to give our soon to be graduates a taste of what life will be like after High School,” he explained. “The OSU Extension Office, along with community volunteers, sponsored a game of “Life.”

Next, students had the opportunity to perfect their interview skills with HR directors from Menards, Ohio Gas and Sauder. After lunch, Mr. Ryan Breininger, Attorney, talked with our students about legal issues that affect many young adults.

Then, Mrs. Patsy Miller, RN with the Bryan Area Health Education Center talked about health and safety issues. To wrap up the day, Hilltop alums Veronica Roth and Abbie Schaper talked about life experiences after graduation.”

Speaking of Graduation, Mr. Riley told the board that they are moving forward with the plan to host the 2021 graduation ceremony in the main gymnasium. Students will receive a total of eight tickets, six floor seats organized in pods, and two bleacher seats.

Guests will be required to wear masks for the event and to maintain adequate social distancing. A letter to seniors and their parents explaining the end of the year activities was mailed and emailed last week.

Elementary Principal, Laurie Worline, gave a “huge thank you” to Mary Sauder, Michelle Steffes, Elizabeth Horton and Ruth Parrott for planning the Right to Read week.

She said they had many special days including “dress as your favorite Hilltop hero”, “Crazy hat/hair/mask” days and “super sports and socks day.” Kindergarten Screening went well and they have 44 kindergarten students and 12 Kinder Cadets registered so far.

On May 7th the Fourth grade went to Harrison Lake and on May 11 the FFA held Minute to Win It games for the Elementary. Upcoming events include: May 14 FFA Tractor and Animal Day; May 17/18 Mobile Dentist; May 19 DARE Graduation for Fifth Grade; May 21 Track and Field Day; May 24 Accelerated Reader Skating Party; and May 26 Last Day of School with 1:00 Dismissal.
Summer School/camp will begin June 2 from 8:30-11:30. It will run from June 2-June 24 and then again from August 2-12. Grades 1-3 (next year’s grade level) will be on Monday and Wednesday and Grades 4-6 on Tuesday and Thursday.
