The Bryan City Band made its debut on the downtown square on Wednesday, June 25, treating community members to an evening filled with lively marches, nostalgic memories, and patriotic staples under the summer sky.
The concert opened with “To the Stadium March,” by Sam Rydberg, setting a bold tone for the evening. The ensemble followed up with a variety of selections, including “Cascade River Overture,” by Douglas Akey, and the reflective “With Quiet Courage,” by Larry Daehn. Listeners were especially delighted by Frank Cofield’s energetic “Trumpets, Ole!” and a charming arrangement of “March with Mancini” by Johnnie Vinson.
Duke Ellington’s classic “Caravan” brought a jazzier flair to the program, followed by the hauntingly fun “Things That Go Bump in the Night,” arranged by Jay Bocook. Ralph Ford’s “American Hymn-Tune Trilogy” and Mike Sweeney’s arrangement of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” added a mix of reverence and retro pop.
The concert concluded with Karl King’s rousing “Rough-Riders March,” and a finale consisting of “God Bless America” and the “Star-Spangled Banner,” sending the crowd off with a patriotic pride with warm applause.
As always, the Bryan City Band delivered a beautifully performed concert for the many people of Bryan who enjoy live, classic music.
