MILLCREEK-WEST UNITY BOARD OF EDUCATION: Local Pastor Seeking To Create Mentorship Program

The Millcreek-West Unity Local School Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, November 10, in the school library.

Board members in attendance were David Chester, Randy Mahlman, Heather Jones, Dawn Layman, and Brian Wieland. They approved the minutes from the October board meeting and the financial report for October.

Pastor Robert Rodriguez of Solid Rock Church spoke to the board about creating a mentorship program for student-athletes and their coaches.


The board also thanked Rodriguez for the meal provided to the teachers during the recent parent-teacher conferences.

Superintendent Steven Riley presented the proposed 2026-27 school calendar for discussion and input. He also presented a calendar with the proposed 2026 board meeting dates and gave the board the opportunity to comment.

The board approved the second reading of the NEOLA new/revised/replacement board policies and the curriculum for the 2026-27 school year.


In other action, approval was given for the State Special Education Model policies and procedures, and an updated district emergency operations plan.

The board approved Michelle Steffes as the middle school spelling bee advisor and Randy Mahlman as a volunteer baseball coach.

Donations were accepted from James A. and Jane A. Hutchinson of $655.65 for the Suter Scholarship; a large box of protractors from Moore Industries of Montpelier; book bags from Living Hope Church, and backpacks from West Unity Senior Center.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:23 p.m. with the next meeting set for Monday, December 8, at 6 p.m.
