MILLCREEK-WEST UNITY BOARD OF EDUCATION: Longtime Board Member Recognized By Ohio School Boards Association

The Millcreek-West Unity Local Board of Education met on Monday, October 13, as the meeting was held in the district library.

Board President Heather Jones called the meeting to order. Board members present were Brian Wieland, Randy Mahlman, and Heather Jones. David Chester and Dawn Layman were both absent.


Superintendent Steve Riley congratulated and thanked board member Brian Wieland for his 20-plus years of service to the school board.

Wieland was recognized at the Ohio School Boards Association Northwest Region Fall Conference held in Perrysburg on October 2.

Riley also presented the Northwest Ohio Educational Service Center Business Advisory Council Plan and meeting minutes, and the first reading of NEOLA policy updates.

The board then approved several agenda items.


-The September 2025 financial statement and the minutes from the September 2025 board meeting.

-Entered an agreement with Bryan City Schools to provide special education services for the 2025-26 school year.

-Participation in META Solutions Cooperative and authorized them to advertise and receive bids on behalf of the school board for bus purchases from November 2, 2025, through October 31, 2026.

-The district financial forecast and assumptions.


The board approved the following revenue changes and appropriation modifications.

-Academic ($1,400 decrease in appropriations).

-Class of 2023 ($1,211.07 decrease in appropriations).

-Football ($1,000 decrease in appropriations).

-FFA ($20,000 increase in revenue and appropriations).

-Project Maintenance ($30,000 increase in appropriations).

-Class of 2019 ($315.43 decrease in appropriations).

-Class of 2016 ($8.25 decrease in appropriations).

-Fiscal Year 2025 K-12 ($3,900 decrease in appropriations).

In other action, the board approved the following:

-Kyle Rivas for early graduation after completing the requirements for graduation.

-Elizabeth Elting and Allyson Short for salary advancement to the Master Salary Schedule.

-Accepted the resignation of Brian Nelson, junior varsity boys basketball coach.

-Janice Bruner, Cristin Hagans, Jen Yoh, Michelle Steffes, Vicki Rhodes, and Amanda Nofzinger- HOSD Committee.

-Nate Mueschke as junior varsity boys basketball coach and junior varsity baseball coach.

-James Moore as junior varsity girls’ basketball coach.

-Brent Johnston as assistant girls’ basketball coach.

-Maddie Schaper as junior varsity softball coach.

-Larry Robarge as assistant softball coach.

-Jeremy Hartman as assistant baseball coach.

-Julia Rodriguez as a volunteer assistant high school cheer advisor, pending completion of all credentials.

-Accepted donations from West Unity Presbyterian Church (donated clothing) and Klinger Pharmacy (donated miscellaneous school supplies).

-Graduate study reimbursement for high school principal Troy Cummins.

-Curriculum for the 2025-26 school year.

-Overnight trip for the varsity volleyball team to attend the OHSAA State Volleyball Tournament at Wright State University on November 7-8, 2025.

-Deduct days for Lisa Holsopple for October 8, 9, and 10, 2025.

-Rescind the district literacy coach supplemental contract for Dorothy Lambert.

-Tabled the resolution to approve Randy Mahlman as a volunteer baseball coach until additional board members were in attendance to vote.

The board approved supporting the establishment of and participation in the Great Lakes Conference for football beginning in the 2026 season.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:13 p.m. The next regular board meeting is Monday, November 10, at 6 p.m. in the district library.
