The Village of Montpelier convened for its regular council meeting on Tuesday, May 27, at 6:00 p.m. at the Montpelier Police Department.
All members were in attendance, including Mayor Steve Yagelski, Council President Heather Freese, Clerk Molly Collert, Village Manager Jason Rockey, Melissa Ewers, Kevin Motter, Chris Kannel, Nathan Thompson, and Don Schlosser. The session began with the customary call to order, followed by roll call, a moment of silence, and the Pledge of Allegiance.
Council members approved the evening’s agenda, along with the minutes from the May 12 meeting. Both motions passed without opposition.
Comments from council included an update on Memorial Day affairs presented by Kevin Motter. He reported a successful Memorial Day celebration throughout Montpelier.
The veteran banner project is currently underway, with an additional 20 banners to be still hung up. There were a total of 80 applications received, and Motter is pleased with the overall community involvement.
The Viaduct Dedication went swimmingly, with several members of the council attending including Commissioner Westfall, Ohio Representative Jim Hoops, and local resident Tarry Eicher.
Each bridge will serve as a solemn reminder of the cost of peace. The Blue and Gold Star Families Viaduct is located by the Riverside Cemetery and the POW/MIA Memorial Viaduct is near the Moose of Montpelier.
Each is situated along the Williams County Memorial Highway. Motter also noted an unexpectedly large turnout for the Veteran Monument, with even local news station WTOL present as well.
Kicking off summer, the council announced the first of the Cruise-ins to begin on June 10. These will be held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month.
Managed by the Chamber of Commerce, each event will be sponsored by a different local business. The first kick-off will be sponsored by the Montpelier Rotary Club.
The streetlight issues on East Main street, by Miller’s grocery store, have been restored. Village Manager, Jason Rockey, reminded locals that the streetlight has been known for its issues. Fixing it is largely based on trial and error, and this marks the fourth outstanding issue it has had.
Council members approved scheduling the village’s Trick-or-Treat for October 25, 2025, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
An ordinance involving backflow has been reapproved and reworded. The EPA recently performed an evaluation but found only clinical wording errors.
Nothing involving standard or quality of water was included. By changing the ordinance, Montpelier hopes to follow the language guidelines.
With no further business to attend to, the meeting adjourned at 6:16 p.m.
