A Montpelier teen loves to help other people and has garnered some notoriety for giving away shoes and socks to others in need. More recently, Jade Scott has been raising money for local law enforcement programs to help augment their funding streams.
Jade organized a beauty pageant/fundraiser May 19 and raised $764. She disbursed $200 each to the Montpelier Police K-9 unit, the Williams County K-9 unit and the Williams County DARE Camp; $100 for Hills and Hollers, a Kentucky-based ministry to the people of the Applachan Mountains and $64 in cleaning supplies for a Ronald McDonald House in memory of a stillborn baby, Benten Carpenter.
And she didn’t stop there. Jade collected 700 items to be donated to her church food pantry and the Ronald McDonald House.
“Please join us all in thanking her for her community service, hard work ethic and all around selflessness. The world is a better place with people like you in it,: the Sheriff’s Department stated on Facebook.
Jade wanted to raise money for DARE because she believes many people are attending camp without paying for it. She doesn’t want the program to suffer financially. She organized the pageant and decided to collect money for other causes instead of shoes and socks,
Jade chose the K-9 units because those organizations are always looking for people to raise funds for them. She chose DARE because she learned the program is losing money because people cannot or will not pay for camp.
“It’s becoming harder and harder to run these camps because they are losing money,” Jade said. She previously donated $500 to the DARE boosting her total to $700. Jade is a regular attender at the DARE camp and this year will be a role model (senior youth leaders).
Jade gained local attention a couple of years ago when she received a grant from the Disney Corporation and used it collect shoes for a giveaway at Montpelier School. Last winter she held another giveaway at Mill Creek-West Unity School.
The family has a shed out back where Jade keeps her shoes and socks. She recently received 3,000 pairs of socks from Bombas, a company that gives away one pair of socks for every pair it sells. The socks are constructed with an anti-microbial fiber that doesn’t require washing immediately after being word, Jade’s mom Jaimi Geren said.
Jaimi and Jade have been busy sorting through the socks. The company just made Jade a “Giving Partner” of Bombas.
June 7, two representatives of Power in the Purse, a Williams County women’s giving circle presented Jade with a check for $6,000. She was nominated by Club member Helene Moog. The family will use the money to purchase a trailer allowing Jade to become mobile. Jaimi said.
