Tighter security protocols are now in place at the Williams County Courthouse, following the implementation of new rules that took effect May 1.
Visitors are no longer permitted to bring bags or electronic devices capable of connecting to the internet, including cellphones, into the building.
The changes were adopted based on recommendations from a recent security assessment conducted by the Ohio Supreme Court.
While some exemptions to the rules exist, all individuals, regardless of exemption status, are subject to search at the public entrance.
Oversight of courthouse safety remains the responsibility of the Courthouse Security Committee, which handles such matters in executive session in accordance with Ohio Sunshine Law for security issues, under Ohio Revised Code 121.22 (G)(6). Final decisions, including these new restrictions, are voted on during open session.
The updated measures are intended to improve safety and better control the flow of traffic and technology within the courthouse.
