ARCHBOLD– “Mardi Gras” came early at Northwest State Community College, as the college hosted it’s third annual Green Carpet Event. The event honors one individual, on business, and one organization with “Making A Difference” Awards. This year, the individual award went to John Wilson, the business award was given to Rupp Seeds, and the organization award went to the Wauseon Rotary Club.
John Wilson was honored for his dedication and service throughout the Four County area. “First off, I’m humbled and overwhelmed to be given this award,” said Wilson, “but since it is me, I’m also appreciative”. Wilson has spent years sharing his faith with others. “I enjoy seeing lives changed through a relationship with Christ, so I do a lot of sharing in that aspect”. Mr. Wilson has spent his time volunteering with the Gideons (in fact, he just celebrated his 50th year) and does lots of work in correctional facilities, teaching classes and spreading his faith with others. When asked why he believes it is important to help others, Wilson said “When I was young, I went to church with my grandfather. A man prayed and said ‘Lord fill my cup’, my grandfather told me that was not a good prayer. He told me the man should have prayed for the Lord to overflow his cup, so he can give to others. A full cup itself is selfish. That is how I’ve tried to lead my life.”
“It’s humbling to even have been thought of. We aren’t used to this kind of spotlight” said Phil Rupp of Rupp Seeds. They were honored due to their support of schools and students throughout the area. “The support we give is for just that, giving support. It’s not about an increase for our business.”
The Wauseon Rotary Club was the third award winner of the evening, with representatives Bill Strayer, Jim Zeller, Brett Kahrs, and Jeff Robinson on hand to accept the award. Mr. Zeller and Mr. Strayer are both founding members of the club. When asked what the motivation to start the Rotary Club, both Zeller and Strayer both said simply “Because it was needed”. The Club does many things throughout the community. Recently one of the biggest projects was the building of a new sports complex, now known as Biddle Park. “Dorthy Biddle was so very generous, its really beyond words.” said Robinson. Kahrs stated “We do this for the support of the community, not for the recognition. We want to thank the community for all their support, because without them, none of this would be possible.
Not only was this event one where awards were handed out, but it was also an opportunity for guests to help the students of Northwest State Community College. There were silent auctions, a cash bar, and entertainment, and all proceeds from the event go towards a scholarship fund for Northwest State students.
All of the award winners stated a similar theme, and that was that in order to help a community grow, it is important to support that community, and that is exactly what all three award winners have done.
