OHSAA BOYS & GIRLS STATE WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Delta’s Adam Mattin Wins Third Career State Title

COLUMBUS – Twenty-four area wrestlers converged on the Jerome Schottenstein Center on the campus of The Ohio State University for the boys 88th and the girls 3rd annual OHSAA State Championships.

Of the 24, 14 returned home as a state placer led by Delta’s Adam Mattin, wrapping up his career with a third state title in Division III with a championship at 126 to go with previous titles at 106 and 113.


Delta as a team had six of their seven state qualifiers grab a spot on the podium as they finished second to perennial state power St. Paris Graham in the team standings.

Mattin steamrolled his way to the title by getting wins by technical fall in the first two rounds, a second period pin in the semifinals before a tf19-3 win over C.J. Graham in the finals.

Delta junior Tyler Barnes found his way to the finals at 120lbs after an 8-7 decision in the semifinals over Tommy slack of Lake Catholic.


Barnes faced Miami East sophomore Spencer Shore in the finals and Shore scored a couple takedowns for a 10-3 lead after two periods and would go on to a tf22-5 win.

Delta’s placers were rounded out by Richard Flores with a fourth place finish at 132, Connor Sintobin (4th-190), and Cass Chiesa (4th-215)

Also earning spots on the podium in Division III from the NWOAL were Evergreen’s Max Mossing who was seventh at 157 and Swanton’s Evan Smigelski took the bronze at 285.

In Division II, the Wauseon Indians sent seven wrestlers to Columbus and had four earn placements fronted by Jordan Cook (144) and Kale Waxler (175) who each were third.


Cook got a win by fall over Braxden Martin (Perkins) in his placement match while Waxler got a 12-7 decision over Aden Strahler (Warren).

Carter Stuckey (120) grabbed fifth place after a 7-6 win over Caden Mellott (Wapakoneta) and Mykale Schneider (113) got a second period pin of Karson Jenkins (Cal. River Valley) to take seventh.

Stuckey and Cook reached career milestones on day one of the tournament by capturing their 100th and 150th career wins, respectively.

On the girls’ side, the Archbold Bluestreaks had a pair of wrestlers place with Gabby Oregon (235) and Vivi Legato (155) each taking third.

Legato was a 9-7 winner over Lori Grimes (Marysville) in her placement match while Oregon got a 5-1 victory as the Streaks were 11th in the team standings.
