Pettisville Local Board Of Education Discusses Updates For 2015-16

September 10, 2015Updated:November 30, 2016No Comments11 Mins Read

The Pettisville Local Board of Education is pleased to welcome Mr. Brent King as a future board member. Mr. King, along with current board member Dan Bruner have filed for election to for the two open positions on the board of education. Mr. Tom Beck, who has served as a member of the board of education for twelve years, will not be seeking re-election.

The Pettisville Local Board of Education appreciate Mr. Beck’s 12 years of service. He didn’t quite equal his grandfather’s 16 years’ service on the board their service, but they did have some things in common. His grandfather, Dale Beck, helped to save the district from consolidation and Tom helped to build a new facility to ensure its continued existence into the future. Thank you, Mr. Beck for your excellent service to the kids of our school district!

Brent will become the 48th person to serve as a member of the Pettisville Local Board of Education since centralization in 1928. The average time of service for those 47 board members is 9.4 years per member. The longest serving board member was Rod Nofziger, who served 24 years.

There is a soon to be broken tie for second longest years of service. Don Liechty and Curt Spengler each have served 20 years. However, when he completes the current term, Dan Bruner will have served 20 years. His first meeting in January will move him into second place all by himself! (The shortest term was by Jesse Frey who moved from the district shortly after being elected and served less than one year.)

The Pettisville Local Board of Education welcome Mr. King to this board of education meeting and will invite him to attend the remaining meetings until he formally takes his place on the board of education.

Also addressed in this meeting:

Approve the following resolution
Because Pettisville is a participating member of the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) and the District therefore has agreed to the rules and regulations promulgated by OHSAA, it is therefore resolved as follows:
The operation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, is prohibited on Pettisville Local School District premises during District-sponsored contests (including scrimmages and previews), practices, and activities under the auspices of the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA).
District officials may deny admission or entry to anyone attempting to use a UAV until the event has been completed.
Any exceptions to this regulation must be approved in advance by the Superintendent.
Board members were asked to donate $10 to the PTA Flower Fund.

Staffing
Mrs. Barb Stuckey is moving to the class size reduction/intervention full time this year and will not be assigned any time in the library.
Mrs. Rachel Horning will continue in the AM as an aide, will have cafeteria supervision, and will be the library director in the afternoon.
The library will be used a bit differently this year. During the morning, it will be available to classes who will visit with their teacher. In the afternoon it will be open for high school students as well as elementary students for research. Study hall students will not visit the library unless for special research projects.

Play
PHS will be producing a fall play “The Best Laid Plans” for the first time in many years. In the past we would do two plays, one in the fall and one in the spring. When we started doing musicals, we eventually shifted to one musical each year. We have wanted to get back to the two dramatic events each year and are now doing so. Mr. Michael Short, who has assisted with musicals, will serve as the director. The play will be presented twice, on Friday, October 9 and Saturday, October 10 at 7:30 PM.

Projects Completed
Bus Purchase. New bus # 1 –an 84 passenger Blue Bird–arrived on Thursday, August 27, 2015, has passed inspection and will be on the route soon. It will be placed on Mrs. Kelly McDermott’s route. The bus will be the second 84 passenger in the fleet and will be the first bus with interior cameras.
We have reduced the fleet by an additional bus and now will maintain a nine bus fleet with five regular routes. As far as numbering omissions, we have busses 1 thru 11 but with no 7 or 10.

Crosswalk to South Lot:
The handrail at the south entrance was installed in May and Ron Burkholder has re-set a number of pavers that had settled to eliminate irregularities.
Replacement of pavement where it was excavated for sinkholes, expansion the northwest entrance to the parking lot, and paving of a gap in the lot was completed.
All north lots had all cracks cleaned and patched, lots were re-sealed, and relined.
The south lot had all cracks cleaned and patched and several handicapped spaces were added near the entrance to the ballfields.

Projects Pending
Install Gutter Melt Systems (Heat tape in base of gutters) on high roof and low roof of south side of north wing. $7,775
Install Countdown clock in coaches room (for basketball officials) $325
Add wood chips to the elementary playground surfaces. GT Impax – 9,700 Square feet. (200CY) of Engineered Wood Fiber at a 5″ Top-Off – Including installation. We are adding about two semi loads of wood chips to top off the playground surfaces. Total: $5,950.00

High School Report
Mr. Michael Lane, Principal, Pettisville High School

Start of School
The school year began smoothly with students in grades 7-12 prepared to begin the 2015-2016 journey to academic success.

Exchange Students
Pettisville High School has the privilege of hosting two exchange students this year. Both students will provide the Pettisville community with opportunities to learn about their culture and to experience life in Pettisville, USA. Pettisville welcomes the following exchange students to our school:
Bine-Marie Blechmann is a sophomore from Germany who is staying with Barnaby and Michelle Wyse and Family.
Martina Ticali is a junior from Italy who is staying with Paul and Deb Herring and Family.

FinalForms
FinalForms is an online program to manage the documents the district uses for athletic, academic, medical, and other purposes. The program eliminates multiple documents being sent home with students to be completed by parents at the beginning of each school year. This will save parents the time, redundancy and frustration of completing the same document over and over each year.
Every parent with a child in the district needs to register in the system, with parent and each child needing to complete ALL of the documents pertaining to them.
The documents can be completed by going to the Pettisville web page and selecting the FinalForms link under the quick links section on the right side of the page. User guides were also sent home with students for their parents.

New Testing Requirements
For the graduating class of 2018 and beyond, PARCC is out and AIR is in. Students in grades 3-8 and high school will take Ohio’s State Tests in English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies this school year.
Each test will be approximately three hours (180 minutes) and will be divided into two parts. We will decide whether students will take a test in two 90-minute sessions or in one 180-minute session after discussions with teachers.

College Credit Plus
During the first semester of the current school year, there are 19 high school students taking a total of 35 college courses potentially earning 107. The courses being taken are psychology, composition 1 and 2, nutrition, financial accounting, Microsoft applications, American government, the human body, programming C++, management, American history and speech (at Pettisville).

New Kindergarten Readiness Assessment- KRA
At the beginning of this school year (2014-15), a new kindergarten readiness assessment is replacing the KRA-L. The new assessment includes ways for teachers to measure a child’s school readiness. Ohio’s Early Learning and Development Standards (birth to kindergarten entry) are the basis for the new assessment. It has six components: social skills (including social and emotional development, and approaches toward learning), mathematics, science, social studies, language and literacy, and physical well-being and motor development.
The period for the new kindergarten readiness assessment is the first day of school through November 1. All kindergarten children will take the assessment. The results of the assessment provide a starting point for each child, but do not prohibit any child from entering kindergarten.
The language and literacy portion of the new Kindergarten Readiness Assessment will meet the reading diagnostic assessment requirement of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee. To meet the diagnostic requirement, teachers must complete the Language and Literacy portion no later than Sept. 30.
Mrs. Aeschliman and Mrs. Hoffmire received training on new kindergarten readiness assessment administration, score reporting, and use of the assessment data beginning in the spring of 2014. They administered the individual tests to students on September 3rd & 4th during scheduled appointments.
