The Village of Pioneer, Ohio, officially commenced construction on its highly anticipated splash pad at Crommer Park on April 21, 2025.
This initiative aims to provide a refreshing recreational space for families and children, with an expected opening in the summer of this year.
The splash pad is designed to span approximately 80 feet by 56 feet, offering various water features for interactive play. This also includes accommodation for children with disabilities.
The total estimated cost for this project stands at $325,000. To support this endeavor, the Village secured a $200,000 grand from the State of Ohio.
Additionally, local businesses and organizations, including the American Legion Auxiliary have been providing the Village with donations.
Village Administrator Anthony Burnett highlighted that the village would undertake substantial portions of the construction, including concrete work, plumbing, site preparation, and water line installation. This contribution is projected to save the Village approximately $50,000.
The project has opted for a “pump and dump” water system, where water is used once before being discharged. This decision was influenced by cost considerations.
By implementing a recirculating, or recycling system, the project’s initial cost would increase by around $200,000, with an added estimated cost of $5,000 in annual maintenance expenses.
Some residents have expressed concerns about the environmental impact of the chosen water system, particularly regarding the potential effects on the nearby river.
In response, Burnett assured that the splash pad would operate on a timed system, activated by users, to minimize water usage.
Mayor Kidston commented, “I’m confident we will build the system outside the flood zone of the river, which seldom floods any longer since we have made several improvements.”
The village continues to welcome donations to support the splash pad project. Community members and organizations interested in contributing can contact the village administration for more information.
As construction progresses, the village remains committed to addressing community concerns and ensuring that the splash pad becomes a valued addition to Crommer Park, promoting outdoor activity and residential engagement for years to come.
