STATE OF THE VILLAGE Mayor of West Unity Don Leu gave his State of the Village Address at the West Unity Village Council meeting on January 11 2024

“With the exit of 2023, I’d like to welcome everyone to 2024. West Unity has accomplished a variety of different projects this past year.

One long-term project was the installation of new downtown streetlights. This has improved the appearance of the downtown, helping to make us a more inviting community to those living here or passing through.

Also, with the new lights came the addition of new Christmas lights for the new poles and the addition of new Christmas lights in the park. With our community helping, the lights in the park keep growing, giving that Christmas feeling to all that drive through.

Over all the years I’ve lived in West Unity, I’ve never had so many compliments on the appearance of our community as I have had this year.

Other major projects accomplished this past year were the storm drain project on Church Street, which should end constant flooding in that area, along with a waterline replacement down Jefferson and East North Street to help with lines breaking, and Jefferson Street being resurfaced.

Looking to this year, we will be finishing the East North Street project when the weather permits. Then we have only one possible major project, that being a replacement water line on South Main Street.

There are multiple small projects that will be happening throughout the summer, weather and funding permitting.

Projects we’re still working on are housing subdivisions to help our industry with local employees, road replacements around town, and other water line replacements.

West Unity residents might possibly see new playground equipment for Wabash Park, or maybe a walking trail in memorial park. These are just some of the future projects being discussed.

I’d like to thank all those who helped with West Unity’s “Lights in the Park” this past year. We had organizations, businesses, community members, and people outside of West Unity all helping to make “Lights in the Park” a huge success.

It’s been expanding each year, with more lights arriving this past year, and more in the works for this coming year. It’s been great seeing hundreds of people enjoying West Unity for multiple reasons.

I’m looking forward to a new year with all that’s coming, and would like to thank our community, council, and village employees for all of their help in keeping West Unity “the community that cares.”

Don Leu, Mayor
Village of West Unity
