Vada J. Scribner, age 88, of Meadowwood Drive in Toledo, died June 18, 2021, at the Toledo Hospital. She was born June 11, 1933, in the Putnam County rural community of Rice to Walter M. Ernsberger and Phila Morceau (Hill) Ernsberger.
She grew up in Bryan, Ohio. On Oct. 29, 1955, Vada married Thomas Lee Scribner and he preceded her in death in January of 2018.
She was graduated from Fort Wayne Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and received her Bachelor of Science degree from St. Joseph College of Windham, Maine. Vada completed advanced studies at George Washington University, Washington, D.C.
She worked 63 ½ years in the nursing profession, retiring after 26 ½ of those years working as an occupational nurse with the U.S. Department of Labor, Washington, D.C.
Vada was a long-term member of Monroe Street Methodist Church and volunteered in the chaplain’s office in Toledo Hospital. She was a nurse at the Muscular Dystrophy Camp.
She was a member of the Needle Arts Guild of Toledo. Her hobbies were stitchery, needlepoint, knitting and quilting, of which she shared with friends and family. She taught sewing to an inner-city group.
Also surviving are daughter, Elizabeth (Michael) Roland of Hamilton, Ohio; three grandsons, Heath Travis Shearer, Garret Blake (Erin) Shearer and Jobe Ethan Shearer; great-granddaughter, Elane Ann McIntosh; stepgrandchildren, Michael (Jamie) Roland, Lucy (Kevin) Coovert, Morris (Christina) Roland and Randall (Linda) Roland; stepgreat-grandchildren; and sisters, Alice (Earl) Shankster of Bryan, Ohio, Wilma (Phillip) White of Waterford, Michigan.
She was preceded in death by siblings, Robert (Dorothy) Ernsberger, Betty (James) Kuszmaul and Marvel (William) Runkle.
There will be no visitation. Services will be private with interment at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
