
Members of the Wauseon Indians and Bryan Golden Bears swim teams qualified for the State Swim and Dive Meet during the district meet at Bowling Green State University.
Between the two NWOAL teams, five district titles were won, and overall the Bryan girls finished third with 218 points. Wauseon finished in fourth spot with 192 points.
In the boys meet, Wauseon finished third with 193 points. The Indians’ Nicholas Dilworth swam to two individual district titles in the 200 and 500 yd. freestyle. Dilworth’ 200 time was 1:43.18 and his time of 4:40.37 in the 500 was a new district record. Dilworth also swam a leg of the district champion 400 freestyle relay. Joining Dilworth in the race were Brandon Arredondo, Ryan Scherer and Austin Schuette. The same foursome also qualified in the 200 freestyle relay finishing second in 1:30.25. Schuette will also join Dilworth in the 200 and 500 freestyle races as it was determined after all district meet results were compiled. At the district meet, Schuette swam to a sixth place finish in the 200 in 1:53.38 and he was third in the 500 with a time of 5:00.87.
In boys diving, Wauseon junior Tony Schweinhagen will be returning to the state competition with a fifth place finish scoring 402.30 points.
The day belonged to Bryan’s Ashleigh Franks in the Division II girls meet. Franks swam with authority as she will return to Canton for the fourth year in a row. Franks swam to district titles in the 50 (24.26) and 100 yd. freestyle (52.00) races. Franks then teamed up with Hannah Wynne, Izzy Rigg and Meggie Voigt to gain her third district title in the 200 yd. freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.34. The same foursome swam to a third place finish in 1:51.55 good enough to qualify for Canton. Voigt will join Franks in the 50 as the freshman swam to a third place finish in 24:41. Joining the Bryan girls will be freshman Tay Peters in the diving competition. Peters dove to a fourth place finish with 389.90 points.
The Wauseon girls will return the Darnell sisters to the state meet. Sydney qualified in two individual events and two relays, Sydney swam to a second place finish in the 100 butterfly swimming a time of 58.43. Darnell then took third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.08.
Darnell then teamed up with Brooke Schuette, Alexys Carteaux and her sister McKenzie as they swam to a second place finish in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.02. The same four swimmers qualified in the 400 freestyle relay finishing second in 3:39.77. McKenzie Darnell will also swim in the 200 yd. freestyle in Canton turning in a fourth place finish in 1:57.59. Freshman Brooke Schuette will be participating in her first state meet. Schuette was a double winner during district action winning both the 200 and 500 td freestyle races.
Schuette turned in a time of 1:55.87 to capture the 200, then added to that a 5:09.52 to win the 500 yd. freestyle. Joining her team mates will be diver Patience Bachman who returns to state competition after finishing fifth with a point total of 378.05.
