On Tuesday, March 25, the Williams County Commissioners convened for a meeting with Ed Bohn, the former Director of the Paulding County Emergency Management Agency (EMA).
Following the resignation of EMA Director Apryl McClaine, the commissioners are deliberating whether to appoint a new director, utilize an interim director, or collaborate with another county.
Bohn informed the commissioners that the Ohio Revised Code mandates each county have an EMA director, and partnering with another county is permissible.
He also stated that the local agency meets all operational requirements from both the state and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Bohn indicated that an EMA director should engage with the public and take proactive measures. “You about gotta beep your own horn because nobody’s gonna be out there doing it for you and unless push comes to shove, you’re kind of the unknown hero back here making these plans,” stated Commissioner Terry Rummel.
There was also a discussion regarding EMA finances. Typically, the county reimburses approximately half of their expenses through FEMA grants.
However, Bohn noted that these grants have currently been paused due to the federal administration’s stance on the allocation of federal funds.
Fire departments may experience delays in obtaining grants, but it is anticipated that these grants will eventually resume. The National Fire Academy will shut down on June 1.
