A ‘Small Farm and Hobby Farm Livestock Workshop’ will be held Thursday, September 24, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Williams Soil and Water Conservation District Office, 1120 West High Street in Bryan. This workshop is free and open to the public.
Attendance at this event will be beneficial to those who own a small livestock farm regardless of species or size. The featured speaker is Michigan State University Extension Livestock Environmental Educator, Shelby Berlew.
Topics to be covered will be Manure Management, Rotational Grazing, Watering Systems, Animal Mortality, and Avian Flu. There are very few educational field days offered that pertain to small/hobby farms. That is why the sponsoring organizations are excited to bring this learning opportunity to northwest Ohio. Watershed Program Manager Sharon Partridge stated that “hobby farms with livestock face a unique set of circumstances that challenge owners to balance good animal husbandry and site management with protection of our surface water resources. At the workshop, participants will learn how to prevent contaminated storm water run-off from leaving their operations.” Perfect for 4-H families and those with a few horses!
This workshop is sponsored by the St. Joseph River Watershed Initiative, the Williams Soil and Water Conservation District, and a Nonpoint Source Pollution Prevention grant from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
