Faced with the possibility of losing local postal services, Edon Village Council declared its full support for their Post Office during its regular session held Monday, October 15, 2012 at Village Hall Chambers. Mayor Darlene Burkhardt called the evening meeting to order with members Roxana Nester, Lamar Kline, Duane Thiel, Dick Chapin, Chuck Bidwell, Sam Steffes, Fiscal Officer Heidi Bidwell and Solicitor Tom Thompson in attendance.
As many learned earlier this month, the US Postal Service is currently evaluating the Edon Post Office under its POST Plan criteria. Community input, requested through surveys provided by the USPS, will assist them as they “determine the best course of action for providing services” to the Edon area.
Additionally, the Postal Service will be holding a meeting at the Edon Community Building, 320 Parkway Street on Wednesday, November 14 beginning at 1:00 p.m. At that time, representatives will answer questions and provide more information regarding its POST Plan. While survey results will be shared and reviewed, a final decision will not be made until after the public meeting.
To solidify its position on keeping the Post Office open, Council voted to suspend the rules and pass as an emergency, Resolution 03-12 Support of the Edon Post Office. Copies of the resolution will be sent to U.S. Congressman Bob Latta and State Representative Bruce Goodwin urging their support as well.
Council cannot stress enough the importance of residents returning their completed surveys by the October 31, 2012 deadline as well as attending the November 14 Public Meeting. A strong showing of community support is imperative if the Post Office is to remain open.
In other action, members:
• Accepted the Minutes, Financial Reports and Bills as presented.
• Heard Chief Tom Szymczak’s monthly Service Log and Vehicle Report; he also noted the Department had provided security for the school’s annual Homecoming Week Activities.
• Noted leaf pick-up would continue through November 21.
• Learned S & S Directional Boring is slated to clean Village catch basins on State Routes 34 and 49 within the next two weeks; side street catch basins will be checked at that time as well.
• Heard revisions to Ordinance 1321.05 Provisions for Flood Hazard Reduction (first passed by the Village in 1997 at FEMA’s request) were still in progress; Solicitor Thompson hopes to have them completed next month.
• Tabled further discussion regarding the combination of two lots into one parcel on Marilyn Drive. The Planning Commission and BPA will continue working with property owners on the matter; when reached, a final proposal will be presented for Council’s approval.
• Were informed the parking lot (former Village Hall site) had been resurfaced and building doors replaced; bays are expected to be sided as weather permits.
• Were reminded the annual Fall Trash Pickup was Saturday, October 20 and Trick-or-Treat night would be observed in the Village from 6:00-7:00 p.m., Saturday, October 27.
The next regular meeting of the Edon Village Council will be held Monday, November 19, 2012 beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Village Chambers.
