CHECKING THE LEGALITIES … Wauseon Law Director Tom McWatters took some time to find out whether the council could vote on a couple appointments that were in the April 19, 2021 Wauseon Village Council agenda. His research revealed that they had to have a 3/4 quorum so the vote was put off. (PHOTO BY REBECCA MILLER, STAFF)

The Wauseon City Council found themselves unable to approve two appointments, at the Monday night, April 19, 2021 meeting.

It was on the agenda to approve a motion to appoint Brooke Baumgartner as Clerk of Council for the unexpired term ending January 31,2022 and a motion to appoint Chris Gleckler to the Zoning Board of Appeals for the unexpired term ending December 31, 2021, but with two of the six council members absent, Council did not have the three fourths majority that is needed.

It was agreed to schedule a meeting as soon as possible to complete those approvals. (The meeting was held on Wednesday morning, April 21, 2021 at 8:00 a.m.)

Another item on the agenda had to be moved to the next regular council meeting as Vic Cales, who was going to give an update on the Wauseon Beautification Team, did not make it to the meeting for some reason.

Initially Mayor Kathy Huner asked council’s permission to move his presentation to later in the meeting, hoping “he is ok and will show up,” but when he did not, they added that portion of the agenda to the incomplete section of the minutes.

In other business, Council member Patrick Griggs presented a Tree Commission Report on the committee’s April 14 meeting. Griggs said that they are in the process of confirming the times for being at the schools for Arbor Day, April 30.

On that morning they will be planting 20 trees at Homecoming Park. There was some discussion about whether there is a law about damaging trees that belong to the village. It was agreed that there is a need for educating the community on what the rules are concerning trees on the boulevard that belong to the city.

Council present did make a quorum for regular business, so they approved the minutes for the April 5, 2021 regular council meeting and the Committee of the Whole on April 15.

Also approved was a Second Reading of Resolution 2021-6 A resolution joining the Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce in strongly urging the U.S. Postal Service to consider returning mail processing operations to its sorting facility in Toledo, Ohio.

A Third Reading of Ordinance 2021-4 An ordinance amending codified ordinance chapter 1117 establishment of districts and maps and amending the official zoning map, was approved.

The payment of bills was approved and before adjourning, council went into an executive session to discuss pending or imminent court action, with no action taken.
