EVERGREEN BOARD OF EDUCATION: Board Approves Contracts For New Head Coaches

The Evergreen Board of Education held their meeting on Monday, March 20th. The meeting began at 6:00 p.m. with the Pledge of Allegiance before then approving the minutes from the previously held meeting on February 21st.

Meegan Gleckler, an FFA student at Evergreen, then thanked the board for allowing her and Alexis Howell, the FFA Advisor, to attend the National FFA Next Generation Conference in Denver, Colorado.

The following agenda items were then approved by the board. The February 2023 financial reports along with a $100 anonymous donation to the Student Assistance Fund and a $25 donation from Gary and Luann Pennington to the Esports Club.

Appropriation modifications and amended resources were approved next along with a revised Auxiliary Services Agreement with the Educational Service Center of Lake Erie West for the 2022-2023 school year in the amount of $88,038.40 for Auxiliary Services personnel to benefit Holy Trinity School and to amend resources and modify appropriations accordingly.

Personnel items were approved next which included an unpaid leave of absence for Kim Reckner, an EES teacher, effective March 25th through May 26th, and the resignation of Connie Snider, an EES aide, for retirement.

Supplemental contracts for the 2023-2024 school year were offered to Barry Bock for the head football coach position and to Steven McDowell for the head cross country coach position.

A stipend was then approved for Orton Gillingham training for Shannon Leu at a cost of $30.00. Next, an overnight trip was approved for Evergreen FFA Officers to attend an officer retreat at 4H Camp Palmer in Fayette, Ohio.


Another overnight trip was approved for Evergreen’s Esports team to attend the Esports State Championship at the University of Akron if qualified.

An agreement with the Northwest Ohio Educational Service Center was also approved to cooperatively participate in special education services for fiscal year 2023-2024 at an estimated cost of $789,082.47.

A position change then took place for Amanda Brehm from EMS counselor to the EHS counselor for the 2023-2024 school year.

Discussion then shifted to a change of venue that occurred in the Prebis Invitational softball tournament already approved by the board in February.


A grant update was then given with it being stated that, to date, a total of $332,450 has been received for the 2022-2023 school year.

Superintendent Smola then discussed a visit by Ohio Representative James R. Hoops and the upcoming Community Conversation on March 23rd at Wolf It Down BBQ to take place at 4:00 p.m.

Information was also given out regarding two local scholarships that are now available to the Class of 2023.

The board then moved to enter into executive session to discuss the employment of public employees. Following executive session, the board moved to adjourn for the evening.

The next meeting will take place on April 17th at 6:00 p.m. at the Loren Pennington Learning Center inside the high school.
