The Edon Northwest Local School District Board of Education met on Monday, May 13th at 5:30 p.m.

After roll call, the board moved to approve the minutes of their April 8, 2024 meeting, the financial reports for the month of April, the list of graduating seniors, the girls basketball varsity overnight trip, the NWOESC substitute list, and the student accident insurance program for 2024-2025.

Then tackled was the treasurer’s report, which was accepted as presented before Mrs. Lapham shared that prom was a success, with those involved thanked for their effort.

Twenty-two businesses participated in the most recent job fair event, with each grade having one student win a gift card.

The tractor-drive in, which was postponed due to the weather, was a success, and the students are being surveyed on their input on the Chris Herren speaking event.

There were compliments given around town on the conduct of the students off campus grounds, with Superintendent Stevens thanking United Way’s Andy Brigle for facilitating the Herren speaking event.

It was shared that all state testing has been completed, with scores currently coming in for the alternative tests.

The substitutes were thanked for helping to remedy the short-staffing issue faced by districts throughout the country, and the 4th grade field trip was a notable success.

Stevens shared the most recent enrollment numbers, sharing that “a lot of it is people coming in and out of the district,” highlighting that the fluctuations are more a result of the housing market over district conditions. A bus was recommended for sale, and another is being appraised for sale currently.

There has been a conversation between Mayor Thiel and Superintendent Stevens on the topic of a School Resource Officer, with Stevens sharing that additional contracts have been supplied by the mayor for the SRO arrangement, and so a Safety Committee meeting was recommended as soon as possible so that they might be able to evaluate the contracts before the next Edon Village Council meeting.

Three bids have been received for the project with the old bus barn, with the bid accepted and construction having begun.

A new fund was approved for the Class of 2028, as was a fund transfer to the Class of 2025’s Post Prom, the five-year financial forecast and assumptions through 2028, an agreement for school-based mental health services with Joy D. Fruchey and Associates, the first reading of the NEOLA Policy update, the district-wide emergency action plan, a 3% salary increase for classified staff members, all teaching contracts effective August 16, 2023, all non-teaching contracts, supplemental contracts for the 2024-2025 school year, this year’s summer school contracts and rate, and the Jr. / Sr. High Student Activity Handbook and the Elementary Handbooks for 2024-2025.

At 5:54 p.m., the board entered into executive session, with no action expected to take place.
