The Swanton Local School District Board of Education set its annual meeting dates, elected leadership, and handled several other yearly items at its annual organizational meeting Wednesday evening.

Outgoing board Vice President John Schaller was elected to be the new president for calendar year 2025, while outgoing President Steve Brehmer was elected as the new vice president.

Board meetings, which take place at 6:30 p.m. at the district offices at 108 N. Main Street, were slated for February 12, March 19, April 9, May 14, June 11, July 16, August 13, September 10, October 15, November 19, and December 10.

The board approved 17 standing authorizations for the superintendent and treasurer to allow them the freedom to complete the tasks they need to do in order to run the day-to-day operations of the district.

Among the authorizations were such things as ability to appropriate funds, accept donations, sign checks, employ temporary personnel and the like.

The board appointed Marshall & Melhorn, LLC, Squire, Patton, Boggs (US) LLP, and Ennis Britton Co., LPA, as legal counsel for the district. Marshall & Melhorn are used for everyday issues, while Squire, Patton, Briggs is used for levies and certain loans, and much larger firm Ennis Britton Co. is kept on retainer in case greater expertise is needed in any unexpected major issues.

Board members Ben Remer and David Smith agreed to continue to serve on the audit committee, which reviews the annual report from the state auditor.

Treasurer Sheila Horsemann reminded council members that they have to complete mandatory Ohio public records training by the end of their terms.
