Vintage portrait of Ellis Herbert Vaughn and Bathsheba Anna Vaughn of Fulton County, Ohio
FARMER … Ellis Herbert Vaughn, a local farmer, was born January 2, 1868, in Ai, Fulton Township, Fulton County, Ohio, the son of Edward Vaughan (1838–1911). The 1870 census finds him 2 years old and living at home in Fulton County with his parents. He married Bathsheba Anna Shufelt, often referred to as Bashie or Anna, on December 18, 1888, in Fulton County, and the 1900 census finds him married with children, still in Fulton County. He passed away May 29, 1925, at the age of 57 of a perforated stomach ulcer and is buried in Fulton Union Cemetery in Fulton Township. His wife, Bathsheba Anna Shufelt Vaughn Berkebile, lived from January 30, 1871, to January 14, 1963. Bashie was the daughter of Clarissa Alvira Hamp and Warren Wilkerson Shufelt, who were married March 20, 1870, by a Justice of the Peace in Ogden, Lenawee County, Michigan. The couple were enumerated for the 1870 census in the household of Clarissa’s parents, Eli and Bathsheba Hamp, in Fulton Township, Fulton County, Ohio. Clarissa and Warren separated and were divorced. In 1874 Clarissa married Andrew Jackson Coder Jr. and moved to Kansas, and in 1875 Warren married Martha Alice Ulrich and settled in Middleton, Wood County, Ohio. Bashie stayed with and was raised by her grandparents, Eli and Bathsheba Hamp. She bore 12 children, seven of whom survived to adulthood. After Ellis died in 1925, she lived with one and another of her daughters in Toledo until she met and married the widower Samuel R. Berkebile in 1943; he passed away in 1949. Upon her death in 1963 she was survived by seven children, 22 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. As recounted by Vivian (Vaughan) Griesinger and published in The Roots and Branches of Jacob Hamp by Robert M. Hamp, 1987. Thank you to the Swanton Historical Society for the use of this photo.
