Behind Cody Cornell’s contagious smile is a courageous young boy. Diagnosed with leukemia in March, Cody is no stranger to living bravely.
He was born with Goldenhar syndrome, a rare congenital defect characterized by incomplete development of the nose, ear, soft palate, lip, and jaw. This condition has made him deaf with little ability to express himself verbally.
Seven year old Cody resides in Delta with his mother Lacy Etten and younger brother Andy. Just like most boys his age, he loves his Legos, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and video games. He attends the hearing impaired program at Archbold Elementary School through the Northwest Ohio Educational Service Center and likes his second grade teacher Mrs. Jamie Fox.
Cody’s mother shared that earlier this year, he had been sick. At first, doctors thought it was a viral infection but blood work revealed every parent’s worst nightmare. Cancer.
Cody currently receives weekly treatments at Toledo Children’s Hospital. His mother is thankful he hasn’t had to have inpatient treatment, but they have utilized the Ronald McDonald House on a few occasions for early or late scheduled treatments.
Since Cody is loved by his home community of Delta and his school community of Archbold, the two communities have joined forces to support Cody and his family. Ninja warrior t-shirts are available for purchase at both schools. Friday, October 21st has been designated Ninja Warrior night at the Delta versus Archbold football games at Archbold. People are encouraged to show their support by wearing their Ninja Warrior t-shirts. A pre meal will be offered for a freewill offering.
Lacy wants to express her appreciation. “Thank you to everyone who has reached out to us.” The outpouring of support has touched the family.
“It’s day by day. Some days are harder than others. We just need lots of prayers,” Lacy expresses.
If you would like to support the family and are unable to attend the game, you may reach out to Cody’s mother Lacy at 419-388-0050.
In addition, Cody will celebrate his 8th birthday on November 10th. To shower Cody with birthday blessings, cards may be sent to Cody Cornell c/o Archbold Elementary School, 500 Lafayette Street, Archbold Ohio 43502.
