Several Montpelier students were recognized for achievement in various subjects and for their behavior at school by the Board of Education March 14.
The honorees were Syhara Black, kindergarten; Carter Endicott – 1st grade; Kensie Hall – 2nd grade; Gavin Entenman – 3rd grade; Jarron Dohner – 4th grade; Kinsey Word – 5th grade; Elizabeth Wiyrick – 5th grade; Gavin Zyjewski – 6th grade and Kierstyn Hendress – 10th grade.
Eight-grader Brayden JoHantgen was named to the High Five Club for winning the county Geography Bee and going to the state finals later this month.
The board reviewed current legislation which included HB 49, (budget); SB 36, an agricultural use tax and a new bill calling for schools to start after Labor Day to address funding issues.
High School Principal Susan Thorp said the ACT will be given to all juniors March 21 at the high school in the morning. In the afternoon, the students will be taken to Superior School for a pizza lunch and train with the CPR.
Thorp praised all the participants in the recent high school for their hard work and performances.
Thorp congratulated the winter sports teams on a successful season. Several boys crossed the 1,000-point mark in basketball, as well as several records set.
The indoor track relay team did well at the state championships, Thorp said.
The high school had an assembly with Matt Bell with Team Recovery out of Toledo, Thorp said. Bell shared his story about drug dependency and how important it is to make good choices. Thorp said the assembly was successful and how important it was Bell came.
A blood drive Feb. 28 brought in 47 units. That leaves the school 24 units shy of a $500 scholarship for one graduating senior. The next blood drive will be at the high school track May 12 for Relay for Life.
A team from the high school will be competing at the Science Olympiad at Defiance College, March 17-18.
The school’s robotics team will be traveling to the National Robotics Competition April 6-8 at Marion.
Principal Lance Thorp highlighted the elementary school activities.
The elementary school hosted its Second-Grade Reading Night, put on by the academic boosters. Local medical personnel were brought in, including a nurse practitioner, nurse, optometrist and a dentist for the medical theme.
Attendance was round 40 students plus their families. He said this was an improvement over last year.
Several students were slated to compete in the state archery competition in Columbus.
The school is getting ready for testing in connection with the third-grade reading guarantee.
A science fair for grades 3-6 is planned for the end of March.
Students in grades K-3 will be writing letters to veterans who are going on the trip to Washington D.C. in April. In addition, the high school jazz band will be giving the tour group a send-off April 21. High school students who show up for the departure to salute the veterans will be given a two-hour credit on their volunteering requirement, Susan Thorp said.
Correction to minutes May 10, 2016, Resolution #56-16, item 1 should read “To employ Connie Shoup as school nurse for 184 days at $32,569.97 for the 2016-2017 school year”. The incorrect number of days was included in the original May 10, 2016 minutes.
The school received another payment on the real estate settlement. It came in 3 percent higher than expected ($64,900), Carla Rice said.
The overall collection was 4 percent higher than last year, she said.
The board accepted the following donations:

Athletic Boosters, $696 for concession stand salary.
Kent and Connie Lamberson, $50, to the Athletic Department.
Music Boosters, $696, for concession stand salary.
Music Boosters, $319.50, to Girls Basketball.
Women of the Moose, $100 to Jazz Band.
Montpelier Rotary Club, $100 to Robotics.
The board approved:
A transfer of $5,000 from the General Fund to the Yearbook Fund.
Megan Shilling as JH track coach for the 2016-2017 school year.
The resignation of Ashley Thorp, kindergarten teacher, at the end of the 2016-2017 school year and of Cynthia Gere, effective the end of the 2016-2017 school year.
Added Kristyl Fleurkins to the substitute aide list for the 2016-2017 school year.
Approved the hourly rate for student workers at $4.25 effective March 14, 2017.
Approved the NBEC/NWOCA Internet Service Agreement beginning July 1, 2017 and ending June 30, 2020.
Appointed Dr. Jamison Grime to the 2017 Tax Incentive Review Council.
