PRESS RELEASE & STAFF – In a significant legal development today, the Court of Appeals of Ohio Sixth Appellate District issued a temporary stay in a lawsuit against Dad’s Place, a church located in Bryan, Ohio. This decision temporarily halts the enforcement of a previous judgment, allowing for further examination by the Appeals Court. The court has given the city until Thursday, December 12, to respond to the stay order. The court’s official order is attached to the proceedings.
Jeremy Dys, Senior Counsel at First Liberty Institute in a press release to The Village Reporter, commented on the development, stating, “The Sixth District has issued a temporary stay, pending further briefing. We remain committed to pursuing full relief for our client on appeal. A stay pending appeal would be a welcome Christmas present for those facing the bitter cold of Northwest Ohio just days before Christmas. If Mayor Schlade has a plan to keep those who have benefited from the warmth and safety of Dad’s Place, we are eager to hear what it is. Where do they expect them to go?”
The case involves Dad’s Place, a church that has been providing warmth and safety to the community. The Trial Court’s previous ruling had raised concerns about the future of these services, leading to an appeal and the current temporary stay. The temporary stay effectively pauses any actions that would have been taken as a result of the Trial Court’s judgment. This includes the potential displacement of those who rely on Dad’s Place for shelter and support during the cold winter months.
As the Appeals Court prepares to review the case, both parties are expected to present additional arguments and evidence. Legal experts suggest that the review process could take several months, during which the temporary stay will remain in effect.
As the case progresses, The Village Reporter will continue to provide updates and in-depth analysis of the proceedings.
