In January, leaders in Charlotte, North Carolina, invited their favorite son, Billy Graham, to a luncheon in his honor. Billy initially hesitated to accept the invitation because he struggles with Parkinson’s disease, but the Charlotte leaders said, ‘We don’t expect a major address, just come and let us honor you.’ So he agreed. After wonderful things were said about him, Dr. Graham stepped to the rostrum, looked at the crowd, and said, “I’m reminded today of Albert Einstein, the great physicist who this month has been honored by Time magazine as the Man of the Century. Einstein was once traveling…

The 2004 volleyball season was one of my toughest seasons. The first month was spent dealing with gym floor repairs and painting, girls getting things stolen out of their lockers, injuries, bus break downs, people complaining about playing time, the first losing season of my career, and the list went on. That’s not what I planned – that wasn’t part of my goal. I asked myself, “What is going on?” I thought I’d put a lot of time into coaching – preparing and planning. Why weren’t things going my way? How do you deal with frustration? How do you deal…
Jill is following in a Fayette tradition…no frills, no fanfare, just results. Really GOOD results. Is she the fastest on the course? No. What she is, is the consummate team player on a team sport. Working side by side with fellow All-BBC First Teamer Melani Seiler, Jill led her Fayette Lady Eagles through a demanding 2012 season, straight into the BBC Championship.
Someone who bears a strong resemblance to me once coined a moniker, ‘“The Flyin’ Freys.” It started a few years back with Alex, then little brother Lincoln took over. The latest member of the Flyin’ Freys of Pettisville is Dominic, and he is carrying on the family tradition quite nicely. With Dominic out front, The Birds came away as the champs of the Fremont Invitational. He then put his name in the BBC First Team ranks in leading his team to the 2012 conference championship.
WEST UNITY – It was just one point, but the Hilltop Lady Cadets made it count for something. The Fayette Lady Eagles were on their way to winning the 2012 BBC Championship on October 11, and needed just one more Jamboree win to make it a clean sweep of all three events. Sabrina Brown of Edon finished first, but Madeline Routhier of Hilltop took second and Lauren Garrett fourth. With Megan Graber and Tori Johnson of Stryker placing fifth and sixth, Jill Stuckey of Fayette found herself isolated in third. That turn of events gave Hilltop a 48-49 edge in…
WEST UNITY – The Flyin’ Freys of Pettisville are alive and well, thank you very much. Pettisville junior Dominic Frey, the younger brother of former Blackbird Doctors of Distance Alex and Lincoln Frey, placed first at the final BBC Jamboree on October 11. With all five of Pettisville’s scoring runners finishing in the top ten, the Blackbirds swept the BBC trilogy for 2012, giving them back-to-back BBC championships. The Fayette Eagles took second place behind Skylar Lantz, while Luke Graber and Dean Beamont led the Stryker Panthers to third. The understaffed Hilltop Cadets finished fourth behind Brady Livensparger, with Edon…
FOSTORIA – Sixteen teams and 146 total runners…that was what the lady harriers of Stryker, Pettisville and Fayette were in the middle of at the 2012 Fostoria Invitational on October 6. Despite the heavy competition, all three squads performed well at the event, with Fayette taking seventh place, Pettisville ninth and Stryker tenth. Jill Stuckey, who has emerged as an elite distance runner, was first across the line for Fayette with a 16th place overall finish. Megan Graber led Stryker with a 27th place finish, and Samantha Shinhearl fronted Pettisville with a 30th place finish. The following Pettisville, Stryker and…

FOSTORIA – Three representatives of the Buckeye Border Conference, Pettisville, Fayette and Stryker, were on hand at the Fostoria Booster Invitational on October 6. Thirteen other teams took notice of the BBC boys, and for good reason. The Pettisville Blackbirds, with Dominic Frey, Jeremy Mann and Tanner Rufenacht all finishing in the top nine percent of all runners, won the event with 75 team points. The Stryker Panthers placed Luke Graber and Dean Beamont in the top eight percent to take fifth place, while Skylar Lantz finished second overall in a field of 132 to guide Fayette into the sixth…
PIONEER – Sabrina Brown of Edon finished first overall, with Madeline Routhier and Lauren Garrett of Hilltop taking second and third, but cross country is a team sport. When it comes to the team aspect, a balance of quality and quantity is needed, and the Fayette Lady Eagles had just the right balance to win the second of three BBC Jamborees on October 2. Fayette placed first with 48 points, bumping out Hilltop by 5 points for the top spot. Stryker finished third, Pettisville fourth, Edon fifth, and the understaffed North Central Lady Eagles placed sixth. The following finishes were…

The boys’ squad was led by Adam Knepper with an 84th place finish and Devin Nafziger in 92nd. The Eagles finished 17th in the team standings with 464 points. With only three ladies in the field, the girls’ contingent was ineligible for team competition. Morgan Bailey, Taylor Harper and Samantha Vassar took the 103rd, 104th and 105th place finishes. GIBSONBURG – The Hilltop Cadets made the long trip to Sandusky County to take on the Golden Bears of Gibsonburg on October 12. With both teams sporting 2-5 records, this TAAC battle had all the makings of an evenly matched game. It didn’t take the Bears that long to take the even out of the equation though, as the hobbled Hilltop squad, now with Billy Wagner out with injuries, quickly fell behind and lost by a 54-20 score. By the time that Justin Grapengeter ran the ball in for the first Cadet score of the evening at the 9:36 mark…
