Bryan Schools Board of Education held their monthly board meeting on Monday night, May 16, 2022. Approval was given for the April regular meeting minutes and the May 12 Emergency meeting minutes.
Public participation held three people who wanted to address the board. Amy Roper, on behalf of her child, read a statement asking that the decision to not call her child by their preferred name at graduation be reviewed and that they respect them by calling them by Jay Roper.
Then Jay spoke to the board, sharing that they are graduating at the age of 15 due to hard work, and would like to be called by their chosen name as they walk across the stage for graduation.
They also said that the No Bullying policy was not enforced when they were bullied in the past two years.
When the time ran out, the Superintendent thanked them for their words and said they would take it under consideration.
In Communications, reports were given for Four County, Athletic Department, Curriculum, Elementary, Secondary and the Assistant Superintendent.
Linda Hornung was honored and thanked for what she did when her bus caught on fire. Board members all took time to thank her and commend her. They highlighted the great training as well given by Ryan Eberly. They were invited to ride along any time.
In the treasurer’s report, the board approved financial recommendations, the amend permanent appropriations for FY22, Five year forecast and assumptions, Healthcare process consulting agreement for FY23, authorization to advertise for milk bids, contract for speech services with Stryker Local School District, authorization to participate in all federal programs for the 22-23 school year including Federal Grants, and transfer from permanent improvement fund to Maintenance fund in accordance with MOU with OFCC in the amount of $143,151.32.
The superintendent’s recommendations which were all approved, included:
-Class of 2022 graduates, contingent upon their completion of studies as required by the Bryan City School District and the State of Ohio
-Approval of lunch prices for 22-23 school year: adult $4.10, 6-12 student $3.60, Pk-5 student $3.35, breakfast $1.85, and milk 50 cents
-K-12 Student Handbook and addendums
-22-23 Preschool handbook and addendums
-BCS Dual Sports Participation
-Compensation and benefits schedule
-NWOESC Mentor Program 22-23
-Agreement with University of Toledo-School Psychology Externship

-Agreement with ACE Digital Academy
Personnel Recommendations approved:
-IT Student summer workers on an as needed basis at minimum wage – Kharma Gentner
-New Hire Certified Staff for the 22-23 school year – Emma Blandford, 5th grade intervention specialist and Alexis Kiessling, Elementary Intervention Specialist
-Transfer of Classified Staff – Melissa Laurin, 3rd shift custodian
-Resignation – Taryn Walz, Michael Slattman and Lindsey Smith
-Approval of Classified Substitute for 21-22 – Taryn Walz, Michael Slattman and Hunter Steingass
-Certified Subs for 21-22 – Larry Bowers and Alexis Kiessling

-Non-renewal of supplemental contracts of non-certificateded staff
-Non-renewal of certified and classified substitutes for 21-22
-22-23 supplemental contracts and volunteers
-Non-renewal of supplemental contract for non-certificated staff – Madison Stockman Assistant Softball Coach
-22-23 volunteer – Ben Camarillo
-Policy Items: first reading of Athletic Philosophy policy
Points of information shared were that the next Board meeting will be held on June 13 at 6 p.m.; 21-22 Business Advisory Council meeting is scheduled for May 18 at 7:15 a.m.; and upcoming dates announced included May 16 Senior Scholarship Night, May 18 LPDC, and May 29 Graduation.
