EDGERTON (MAY 11, 2023) – Edgerton belted two home runs and pounded out 13 hits total, en route to a sectional Title.
The Lady Bulldogs advanced to the district semifinals with a 14-2 win over Edon. Edgerton will take on Montpelier at Bryan on May 15 at 5 p.m.
“This is good stuff, a great way to respond at tournament time,” said Edgerton coach Marchetta Caryer.
Edon actually jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After two walks, Emma Howard knocked in two runs with a double.
“A little nervousness is expected, but (Edgerton pitcher) Corinne (Cape) settled down in the second inning and pitched a good game the rest of the way,” Caryer said. “She walked two in the first inning and both of them scored.”
Cape allowed just one hit over the next four innings with no more walks or runs, while striking out nine.
Trailing 2-0, Edgerton came back to tie the game at 2-2 after one inning, starting with an RBI double by Cape. Cape then scored on an Edon throwing error.
Edgerton then scored five runs in the second inning and one more in the third, to take an 8-2 lead. Nessa Cox gave Edgerton the lead for good at 3-2, on a leadoff home run.
After a walk, back-to-back RBI triples from Alivia Farnham and Lola Giesige, followed by a a sacrifice fly from Casey Everetts gave Edgerton a 6-2 lead.
Ava Swank later hit an RBI single, and Giesige hit an RBI double in the third inning to put Edgerton up by the 8-2 margin.
Edon threatened in the fourth inning on a double by Natalie Wofford. But a strikeout ended that threat.
Edgerton then opened an 11-2 lead by scoring three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Cape singled and later scored on an Edon error, while Cox hit an RBI double, and Olivia Wallace followed with an RBI single.
Edgerton then ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, on the 10-run rule, on a three-run home run by Noelle Ritter. Ritter now has the school record for home runs in a season with nine.
“It’s pretty neat to get the record,” Ritter said. ‘I wasn’t thinking about any records coming into the season but after I hit four, someone told me the school record was seven and I thought, I’m halfway there. So, I just kept working hard and hitting it hard and just let the ball get there.”
Edon had two hits, on doubles from Howard and Wofford.
For Edgerton (16-6), eight different players collected hits and eight players had at least one RBI. Ritter hit a home run, two triples, and had three RBIs.
Giesige had three hits on a single, double, and triple and two RBIs, Cox hit a double and home run and had two RBIs, while Ella Miler and Farnham each hit a triple.
