Evergreen Schools hosted a Veterans Day event on Friday, November 10th. The event began at 9:00 a.m. with the 8th grade band playing “Sound Off!”.
Representatives from the AMVETS Post 7574 and St. Mary’s Catholic War Vets Post 306 then performed the posting of the colors before the 8th-grade band performed the “Star Spangled Banner”.
Band members also played “America/My Country ‘Tis of Thee” following the Pledge of Allegiance that was performed by Evergreen Middle School Student Council Representatives.
High School Class Officers then came up and spoke about how Veterans Day was founded, along with the reason as to why Veterans does not have an apostrophe in Veterans Day.
The word Veterans does not belong to any one veteran, and it is not a day that belongs to veterans. The holiday was set up so that others could honor them in any way they could.
Evergreen Elementary School members of the Young Vikings Choir then sang “Freedom Has a Home” before U.S. Army Combat Veteran Mr. Larry Dunbar came up and spoke to the crowd.
Mr. Dunbar spoke somewhat about his time in the service, while also talking about what serving your country means. He also asked all veterans, active duty, and or reserve members to stand up, which led to numerous individuals in the crowd standing up and showing just how many veterans were being honored there that day.
Members of the Viking Voices then sang “Let Freedom Ring” before the Young Vikings Choir sang “Give”. The Viking Voices then sang again for the last time, this time singing “Armed Forces Salute” before the band played “Freedom Finale”.
A moment of silence was then observed before the playing of Taps took place by Trumpeters Mr. Lyons and Mr. Torrence. Asst. Superintendent Dr. Dolores Swineford then offered closing remarks before the retiring of the colors.
