From Friday, December 15 to Sunday, December 17 the Wauseon community was offered the unique opportunity to take a step back in time and enjoy a genuine Christmas experience in the enchanting little town of Bethlehem.
In past years, Bethlehem in Wauseon, organized by members from various local churches, took place at The Church of Wauseon. However, for the first time, it was hosted at the Wauseon First Church of God, located on N. Fulton Street.
The schedule for this year’s event saw some changes as well. Instead of occurring on three consecutive Sunday evenings, as was the tradition in previous years, it took place over a single weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
A serene Live Nativity display featuring community members dressed in period costumes greeted guests as they arrived.
The scene was further enhanced with the presence of live animals, including horses and goats which allowed for a petting zoo experience for kids of all ages.
Other outdoor areas of the church grounds were transformed into an old-world marketplace where attendees could stroll from booth to booth and learn from various merchants how life in Bethlehem looked during the time of Jesus’ birth.
Some wares found at the old-world market included rugs, cloth, candles, baskets, fruits, vegetables, and fish. A skilled blacksmith and his apprentice had also set up shop at the market and forged metal creations right before the eyes of visitors.
The church opened its doors to allow guests a chance to warm up. Once inside, families were invited into the sanctuary to sing Christmas carols and hear the story of the Nativity.
Many visitors made their way through the beautifully decorated hall and took a few steps up to the church’s fellowship room which provided families with a cozy setting to enjoy a light meal.
The menu featured chili cheese dogs, hot dogs, chips, and cookies, all available at a modest cost. Coffee and hot chocolate were also available to keep hands warm while enjoying the outdoor activities.
The Bethlehem in Wauseon tradition, graciously organized by area churches, allowed the community to come together to experience the magic of what Christmas was and still is — a time for unity and joyous celebration of Christ’s birth.
