Hayes H. Horn, 90, of Montpelier, passed away on July 15, 2021 at Parkview Hospital Randalia in Fort Wayne, IN due to injuries sustained in a vehicle accident on July 7, 2021. He was born on April 2, 1931 in Buchanan County, Virginia and was the youngest of 13 children born to Lutisha (Perkins) and Jacob Horn.

Hayes married Mandy Lester of Grundy, Virginia and they had 63 wonderful years together until her passing on February 12, 2020.  Hayes was a veteran, serving in the United States Army as a cook from 1949-1952, and was proud to say he once had the honor of making a cherry pie for General Dwight D. Eisenhower before he became president.

He was a machinist at the Aro Corporation in Bryan retiring in 1996 after 27 years of service. After retirement, he and Mandy spent their winter months in Ft. Mead, Florida where they could stay warm and golf year-round.

Hayes was a member of the Suburban Golf Course in Bryan for many years. He loved the game of golf and was blessed to be able to continue to play well into his 80’s. He cherished the golf trophies he won and had accomplished 3 holes in one throughout the years.

Hayes enjoyed watching the all sports, especially The Ohio State Buckeyes, NFL Football and any golf event he could find. He was a long-time member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles 2233, Bryan, the VFW Post 2489 and was a member of the Church of Christ in Montpelier.

Hayes is survived by one sister, Virgie Matney of Doran, VA; three brothers, Ervin Horn of Shortt Gap, VA, Harvey Horn of Cedar Bluff, VA and Andrew Horn of Abington, VA; many nieces and nephews, including special niece, Linda (David) Freed of Edon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mandy Horn; four sisters, Patty Stiltner, Elizabeth Shelton, Flora Belle Stiltner and infant sister, Mae Horn; four brothers, Ernest, Squire, Ira “John”, and Edd Horn.

Visitation for Hayes will be held on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 from 10-11 am at Thompson Funeral Home on Main Street in Montpelier. A funeral service will take place immediately following at 11:00 am at the funeral home with Pastor Adam Fox to officiate. Interment will follow at Edon Union Cemetery in Edon.

Memorials can be given in his memory to the Church of Christ of Montpelier. Condolences may be left online at www.thethompsonfuneralhome.com.
