(March 28th, 2015) – CINCINNATI: A five-run sixth inning put the Lady Cadet Softball team in prime position to earn their victory against Anderson in the first of their two games played in Cincinnati on Saturday.

It took the girls of West Unity just 6 hits to bring home 8 runs in Hilltop’s 8-2 win in the contest.

Each squad was able to cross home plate in the game’s opening inning, leading to a 1-1 tie that lasted throughout the second. Anderson was able to pull ahead with another run in the top of the third inning, giving them a 2-1 advantage which held for two more innings.

Then, in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Cadet girls made their move. Driving in 5 runs before returning to the field, Hilltop claimed a late 6-2 lead. Their defense would hold firm, not allowing Anderson to knock another runner home in the last two innings. The Cadets would tack on another 2 runs in the sixth to clinch the 6 run victory.

Allie Schmitt and Karissa Crisenbery each played vital roles in the Lady Cadet win, bringing in two RBIs apiece, with Schmitt doing so on a double and Crisenbery a single. Schmitt would also cross home plate twice. Bailey Funkhouser and Shayla Coffman knocked in another RBI each. Coffman led the team with 2 hits, a single and a double. Funkhouser brought her runner home on a sacrifice fly.

Defensively, Hilltop performed quite admirably. Limiting themselves to a single error, as opposed to the 7 made by Anderson, the Lady Cadets were able to strand 11 runners on base.

Starting pitcher Aubrey Wyse earned the victory with six innings pitched. In that span, she gave up 2 earned runs on 5 hits. She also struck out 5 batters, walking 4. Jessica Suboski took the mound in the final inning, closing out the contest by allowing no hits, striking out 2 of the Anderson players to step up to the plate.
