HISTORIC REFLECTION … A tornado struck the Nettle Lake area at approximately 8:45 p.m. Williams County Emergency Management Agency Di-rector Mose Mohre stated that the tornado entered Williams County north of Columbia, coming from Indiana. It angled northeast, through Cooney and across the south edge of Nettle Lake, entering Michigan near County Road 12. Hardest hit were the south and southeast shores of Nettle Lake, where cottages, mobile homes, campers and other property were damaged and destroyed. The 1881 section of the Nettle Lake United Brethren Church was destroyed, approximately 200 area homes were damaged or destroyed, and 18 people were injured, none of them seriously.
