Jack A. Starkey, age 86, of Ida, MI and formerly of Liberty Center, OH, peacefully passed away Monday night, January 18, 2016 at Swanton Health Care with his wife, Hermine by his bedside. Jack was born in Liberty Center on September 1, 1929 to the late Charles Starkey and Tillie (Saul) Starkey. He graduated from Liberty Center High School and later met his wife, Hermine “Tena” Winseman while at a Fulton County Saddle Club’s Square Dance on Horseback. They were united in marriage in Delta on May 31, 1952.
Jack served in the National Guard before owning and operating Jack’s Barber Shop in Toledo for 20 years. Later he opened Jack’s Leather and The Hitchin’ Rail in Southwyck and North Towne Malls. He and his wife shared many hobbies including their love of horses, members of the Chapter C Goldwing Motorcycle Club, camping, leather crafting, music, travel and University of Michigan college football.
Jack is survived by his wife of 63 years, Hermine Starkey; children, Jon (Twila) Starkey, Suzanne (Michael) Arnold and Debora (Thomas) VanWormer all of Ida, MI; sister, Betty Jane (Bob) Bruns; 6 grandchildren, Treg Getzinger, Tracey (Frank) Castillo, Tyrah (David) Deller, Justin (Kari) Arnold, Tasha (Adam) Barrick and Korey Starkey; 10 great grandchildren, Drew, Haley and Corey Getzinger, Jackson Wertenberger, Grace Castillo, Isabelle, Kinsey and Hope Arnold, Alice and Dexter Deller.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth (Margaret) Starkey.
Friends and family will be received from 10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon on Friday, January 22, 2016 at Barnes Funeral Chapel, 5825 St. Hwy. 109 in Delta; where a funeral service honoring Jack’s life will begin at 12:00 PM. Interment will follow at Raker Cemetery in Delta.
