(January 27th, 2015) – EDON: Alex Kiess provided most of the offense for the Lady Bombers in their game against Hamilton.
The senior contributed 27 or her team’s collective points in Edon’s 45-34 loss to the Lady Marines on Tuesday, January 27. Kiess gave a phenomenal effort in the defeat, grabbing 12 rebounds on her way to a double-double. She went 4 for 7 from the three-point line, as well as 5 for 8 from the charity stripe, also compiling 4 steals and a block.
The rest of the Bomber girls struggled mightily on the offensive end of the floor against Hamilton, however. Kaitlyn Sonneberger, an Edon junior, scored 6 points off of a pair of field goals from inside the arc, while sophomore Eliza Zulch made but a single free throw in the contest to round out the rest of the Bomber scoring.
The two teams wrestled for control of the contest from the opening tip. After a back and forth battle in the first quarter, the Lady Marines pulled ahead by a skinny 12-11 margin. They were able to build on that lead in the second period, though, and the girls of Edon soon found themselves down 25-17 and heading for the locker room.
The hometown Bombers fell further behind in the third period as well, though their defense played better coming out of halftime. Hamilton outscored Edon 8-4 in the quarter. With their backs against the wall, the Lady Bombers gave everything they had in the final stanza. They came quite close to overtaking their guests from Indiana on a couple of occasions, but the Hamilton girls always had an answer. By the end of the game, the Marines had reestablished most of their lead, winning by 11.
While scoring was hard to come by for most of the Lady Bomber roster, all of them played hard. Junior Breanna Davis, despite not being able to capitalize on some openings in the Hamilton defense with her mid-range game, still recorded 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Zulch brought in 2 boards and had a deflection. Sam Weidmer, a sophomore, pulled down a rebound of her own, while also making a block and a pair of deflections.
Though they were unable to come away with the victory, the Lady Bombers displayed a lot of heart against Hamilton. With senior Kaitlin Chrisman unable to play with a broken hand, Kiess will likely have to continue carrying the scoring burden for this young Edon squad for the remainder of the year.
