The Lyons Village Council met Monday, June 8, with members receiving updates on several village projects, water matters, community events, and items that will continue moving forward over the coming months.
Council approved placing both a 4.1 mill levy and a 0.5 mill levy before voters on the November ballot.
Officials reported the village’s jetter remains out of service as crews continue to have trouble obtaining replacement parts. Council also received an update on the vacated strip of property at Kennedy and West streets, with the necessary deeds completed and awaiting pickup from Village Solicitor Kevin Bibler’s office.
Sidewalks were also discussed, with the council receiving the final presentation materials from the University of Toledo capstone project on village sidewalks.
Representatives from Lake Erie West and the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments will begin assisting the village in pursuing grant opportunities for sidewalk repairs and replacements.
Road paving discussions remain on hold while officials continue to review future plans.
Bulk trash pickup was discussed, with Atlas submitting a cost estimate of $2,000. The village is also waiting to hear whether Lyons Township plans to conduct a community bulk pickup this fall.
Council also reviewed quotes for new fencing at the recycling center, though discussion on that item remains on hold.
Council reviewed this year’s Memorial Day parade and ceremony, which officials said received many positive comments from the community, especially regarding the reading of the names of military veterans buried in the cemetery.
Kathie Brock has agreed to continue organizing the event. Officials also said the village’s first farmers market of the season went very well, with strong attendance and early feedback indicating residents prefer the event’s location at the park. The next market is scheduled for June 20.
Mayor Barnhiser and village officials provided an update on the planned communications tower, following a preconstruction meeting held on June 4. Contractors are currently securing final permits, with construction expected to begin within the next few months.
Officials said the tower base is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with the full tower also expected to be erected before year’s end.
Water matters also made up part of the discussion. The village’s annual Consumer Confidence Report for the water system was mailed May 26, and a meeting with the City of Wauseon regarding water service is scheduled for July 7. Council also reviewed recent total trihalomethane testing results, with samples measuring 47.9 parts per billion at the pump house and 31.7 parts per billion at the water tower.
Officials said the results were good and helped lower the village’s overall average. A failed fitting at the pump house was also recently repaired.
Officials addressed a recent sewer issue at Todd Keefer’s Cleveland Street property after a section of pipe was found to have settled in the yard because stone had not been placed beneath it during installation.
The issue was determined not to be the village’s responsibility, and the property owner handled the repairs.
Council was also informed that Mike Remer has been named the new director of the Fulton County Economic Development Corporation.
Zoning matters were discussed, and council expects to receive quotes for village trash service before its July meeting, when officials plan to award a new contract.
The next regular meeting of the Lyons Village Council will be held on July 13, 2026, at 7:00 p.m.
