(1971 Graduate Of Montpelier High School)
Mark Herb died peacefully in the company of his family at UC San Francisco Hospital on July 15, 2026, after a brief battle with cancer.
Born in Montpelier, Ohio, Mark was the second of three children born to Thelma (Babe) and John Herb.
He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1971, where he played football and track and performed in school plays.
After graduating from high school, Mark attended the University of Miami (Florida) and Miami University (Ohio), where he focused on theater studies.
In 1973, he moved to New York City to try and make a career in theater. While there, he studied acting at the Stella Adler Studio and worked in a variety of summer stock productions.
It was in New York that Mark met his first wife, Fleta (Bobbi) Bills. They married in 1978, and in 1984 they moved to San Francisco and had two children, Tyler and Cleo.
Mark married for the second time in 2004 in San Francisco to Loreen Bernardini. They had two sons, Hayden Herb and Logan Falco, and have been together for 25 years.
After moving to San Francisco, Mark worked at a variety of jobs before working for Challenge Dairy, Berkeley Farms and finally Trader Joe’s. What he enjoyed most about the work was engaging with colleagues and customers.
Mark’s personality drew him to people and drew people to him. When he walked into a room, he filled the space. His friendship was genuine, and people responded to that. He maintained friendships over decades with people living over a thousand miles away, and he built new and lasting friendships at his various jobs.
Family was particularly important to Mark. He especially loved family gatherings and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Mark had a lifelong passion for music. He started piano lessons at age 8 and continued playing throughout his life. He was particularly fond of jazz and could really swing playing some of the jazz piano standards.
He would enthusiastically share his passion by sending video clips of jazz greats, introducing you to musicians you may not know and telling stories of going to clubs in New York and getting to know some prominent jazz pianists.
Mark is predeceased by his father, John Herb; his mother, Thelma (Babe) Herb; and his stepfather, Willard Allen.
