WEST UNITY: May 2 – Six schools were in contention for the gold at the 2014 Hilltop Relays on May 2, but only two of those schools pulled into town at full team strength.
While Stryker, North Central, Fayette and the hosts from Hilltop made spirited cases for themselves, only the Edon Bombers and the Montpelier Locomotives were able to place combatants in each of the 13 events. The Boys in Bomber Blue came out of the gates fast and furious with the Locos in fourth place, but Montpelier would slowly climb the rankings until they passed the Fayette Eagles for second place.
Trailing Edon by just two points after the 800 relays, the Locos made their move in the 3200 relays, taking a 54-50 lead with four events remaining. Edon won two of the final four events and placed second in the other two, but so did Montpelier. The attrition paid off as the Locos won the final event to give them an 82-78 win over Edon for the championship, with Fayette, who faded down the stretch, placing third with 54.
North Central placed fourth with 24 points, with Stryker edging Hilltop for sixth, 17-16.
