LOUISVILLE, KY: May 10 – Archers from the Montpelier and Stryker Schools were in action at the 2014 National Archery In Schools Program (NASP) National Tournament in Louisville from May 8 through May 10.
Although not considered a ‘school sanctioned’ sport like football and basketball and relatively new by comparison, school archery clubs are springing up and growing in popularity and success. In order to reach the NASP Nationals, archers must compete in the same elimination processes as their counterparts in sanctioned school teams. They must survive tournaments that get progressively tougher in talent levels. The pinnacle of their sport is found at the NASP Nationals, where they face off against the finest school archery clubs in America.
With enough participants to fill two squads, Montpelier sent a high school and a middle school team to the Nationals this year. Their high school team rang up a score of 3246 points, with 135 ‘tens’…what the average bystander would call a ‘bullseye’. Of the 164 teams competing, the Montpelier High School team ranked 69th overall. Stephanie Ticey and Collin Houk led the Locos with identical scores of 280 with 15 tens.

The team from Stryker did not have as many participants, and many of the participants on their high school team were in fact middle schoolers. They finished ranked 121st out of 164 with 3146 team points and 93 tens, an impressive feat considering the majority of the team is very young and had to battle through regional and state tournaments just in order to qualify for the Nationals. Gabrielle Stuckey, an eighth grader and Athlete of the Week alumnus who has been with the program since its inception in Stryker, led the team with 284 points and 17 tens…over 18 percent of the tens rung up by the Panther Pack on the day.
