North Central High School will be searching for its third head football coach following the decision to non-renew the contract of Tyler Iwinski by the board of education at its February 17 board meeting.
The decision to non-renew Iwinski’s contract was recommended by a 3-2 vote to go in another direction in the Eagles’ football program.
After previously serving as an assistant coach for eight seasons at Wayne Trace, Iwinski inherited the head coaching duties of the football program succeeding Scott Thompson.
Thompson served as North Central’s first head football coach in school history in 2022 and guided the Eagles to back-to-back Division VII state football playoff appearances and a combined 15-7 coaching record in two seasons.
North Central posted consecutive 3-7 campaigns under Iwinski’s tutelage for the past two seasons, thus he finished with an overall coaching record of 6-14.
Last year, the Eagles also went 2-5 in their first and only year in the Toledo Area Athletic Conference. Five of their seven losses were to state playoff qualifying teams, Woodmore, Paulding, Whiteford (Michigan), Edon and Montpelier.
“I have no further insight to share for the reasons behind the board’s vote other than what is in the board minutes,” commented North Central Local Schools Superintendent Michael Bute via an e-mail response.
Bute added the district now has initiated its normal hiring procedure, and the position has already been posted internally.
