SWANTON – (February 21, 2026) – It’s been almost two decades since Archbold last captured the Northwest Ohio Athletic League wrestling title.
And despite winning just a pair of individual titles, the Bluestreaks were able to claim the NWOAL hardware for the first time since 2007, capturing the league tournament held at Swanton High School.
Archbold dominated the tourney with 197.5 points followed by Liberty Center (174), defending league champion Delta (170), Wauseon (126), Swanton (67), Patrick Henry (51), Evergreen (50.5) and Bryan (19). It’s also the 11th league title for the Bluestreaks in program history.
“It’s been a long time,” said Archbold head coach Cody Ruffer. “Delta and Wauseon have had a pretty strong hold on the league championship going back and forth. I’m pretty proud of our guys and we wrestled well today. I thought if we came and wrestled tough, we could get it done. Hopefully, it’s something we can continue to do here.”
Standout freshman Brenden Bosco claimed the first of two NWOAL titles for the Bluestreaks rallying from behind to upend Liberty Center’s Braxton Tammarine in a thrilling 13-9 victory in the 106-pound final.
Bosco had already defeated Tammarine twice this season. The most recent was a 17-3 major decision in the Division III district team dual meet tournament two weeks ago. Bosco trailed for almost the entire match until he got a takedown with 15 seconds to tie the match at 9-9.
He then put Tammarine on his back for a four-point near-fall in the closing seconds to claim his league title.
“He (Bosco) got down early and kind of struggled back,” said Ruffer. “He kept his head down and just kept coming right at the end when he got that turn and it was big for him.
Brooks Miller claimed the other league title for the Bluestreaks with a fall over Kendell Pontious of Wauseon in 2:56 for the 113-pound title.
“He’s (Miller) is very deserving and just goes after it,” said the Archbold coach. “He’s a great leader and works hard. I’m super proud of him of finally get one here.”
Despite getting ten wrestlers in the finals, but only two league champions, the Bluestreaks coach commented that several of his wrestlers lost some tight matches in the finals.
“There are things we can fix,” said Ruffer. “We got a week to get things right and go through things. I’m super proud all the way from the young guys to the older guys and we battled tough.”
Delta’s Tyler Barnes became just the 20th wrestler in NWOAL history to win his fourth straight league championship pinning Lars Soles of Archbold in 3:44 to claim the 126-pound title.
“We’re proud of Tyler,” said Delta head coach Mark Nagel. “Tyler (Barnes) always works hard and does everything right. This puts him down as one of the best wrestlers we’ve had. It’s something that he can be proud of for a long time.”
Barnes joins seven other former Delta wrestling standouts, Anthony Carrizales, Jared Evans, Kyle Keller, Adam Mattin, Cole Mattin, Zack Mattin and Jamison Moss on the four-time NWOAL champion list.
“I just go out there and wrestle the same in every single match,” said Barnes. “It’s big for our school because I’m the 20th wrestler to win four league championships.
“It feels good because we have a quite of few really good wrestlers who are already on the list. I know that I’m that good, and it took me a while to believe in that. I feel very confident this year and just want to keep rolling.”
Barnes was one of four league champions for the Panthers. Lane Lopez defended his 157-pound title over Liberty Center’s Brady Badenhop, who was unable to wrestle in the final due to a medical forfeit.
Gunner Taylor claimed the 165-pound title with a narrow 1-0 decision over Archbold’s Ashton Stuckey and Marcus Nagel pinned Archbold’s Ethan Bowman with a 17-1 technical fall at 175 pounds.
“We’re pretty proud of our four league champs that we had,” said Nagel. “Our guys made a great effort, but we just made some mistakes today.
“Congratulations to Archbold for its league championship. Now it’s about peaking at the right time and that’s what we going to try to do.”
Runner-up Liberty Center claimed four individual titles. Braedyn Tammarine won his second NWOAL crown with a 7-2 decision over Tyson Bosco of Archbold at 120 pounds. Daine Bayer posted a 15-3 major decision over Thomas Hernandez of Delta at 138 pounds.
Freshman Kolton Wymer posted an 11-0 major decision over Isidro Hernandez of Archbold at 215 pounds. Logan Sifuentes defended his 285-pound title with a fall over Brady Smith of Delta (2:41) in a matchup of highly ranked Division III wrestlers.
Wauseon had a pair of individual champions in Carter Stuckey (132) and Joseph Lugabihl (144).
Stuckey decked Isaac Brown of Archbold in 1:05 in his title bout. Lugabihl claimed a 9-1 major decision over Kayden Wellman of Archbold.
Trent Johnson of Patrick Henry defended his league title at 190 pounds with a dominating 20-7 major decision over Wyatt Flickinger of Delta.
Swanton’s Chase Godwin claimed the Bulldogs lone individual title at 150 pounds with a thrilling 4-1 overtime decision over Layne Miller of Archbold,
With the score tied at 1-1 after three periods of regulation, Godwin scored a three-point takedown with 32 seconds remaining in overtime to pull it out.
In addition, three wrestlers, Logan Sifuentes of Liberty Center, Parker Bixler of Archbold and Trey Weirauch of Archbold achieved milestones in winning their 100th career match.
