ONC Cindy Seaman, navigator for transitional care, gave an overview of her duties and how patients with joint replacements performed are assisted in their care when they return home the next day after surgery.
The orthopedics nurse navigator educates the patient and helps prepare them for home living. Mrs. Seaman reported orthopedics classes for patients were started in 2013 and currently continue to be scheduled for patients. Physical and occupational therapists participate in instructing attendees.
“Surgery is a minor part of the whole recovery process” according to Mrs. Seaman. The nurse navigator conducts follow-up with the patient after hospital discharge, reminding them not to be afraid to ask for help and they need the support and encouragement of other people (family, friends & neighbors).
Post-discharge follow-up includes checking with the patient on medications and any needed home health care.

Previously Medicare required three days hospital stay after orthopedic surgery. This was changed recently to require patients having this surgery to go home the next day.
At Parkview-Bryan Hospital Dr. Hanna performs surgery for knee replacements and anterior approach (frontal-entry) hip replacements, which eliminates cutting muscles.
